Edaphochloris, gen. nov.: a new genus of soil green algae (Trebouxiophyceae, Chlorophyta) with simple morphology

Anna Temraleeva et al.

Summary: Nannochloris-like green microalgae have evolved through convergent evolution, and their high phylogenetic, physiological, and ecological diversity is often hidden by their simple morphology. Molecular tools were used to study two strains of Nannochloris-like algae, and based on the differences in cell shape, chloroplast type, reproduction type, habitat, and genetic distances, a new genus called Edaphochloris has been proposed.

Update on food sources and biological activity of odd-chain, branched and cyclic fatty acids -- A review

Grzegorz Dabrowski et al.

Summary: This review synthesizes recent data on the food sources and physiological properties of odd-, branched-chain, and cyclic fatty acids, highlighting their impact on human health. The estimated daily intake of these fatty acids from typical Western diets is approximately 1.5g, mainly derived from ruminant fat. In Asian countries, significant sources come from spirulina and fish. For vegans and vegetarians, algae, selected plants, mushrooms, and fermented plants are the best sources. However, there are inconsistencies in specific fatty acid data from different sources.

Characterization of a green Stentor with symbiotic algae growing in an extremely oligotrophic environment and storing large amounts of starch granules in its cytoplasm

Ryo Hoshina et al.

Summary: The Stentor genus, particularly the Stentor pyriformis species, is characterized by its trumpet shape and unique features. Through investigation in Japan, S. pyriformis was found in 23 locations, all of which were oligotrophic environments. The cells of S. piriformis contain starch granules and symbiotic algae, suggesting an adaptation strategy for survival in nutrient-poor and cold conditions.

An integrative approach sheds new light onto the systematics and ecology of the widespread ciliate genus Coleps (Ciliophora, Prostomatea)

Thomas Proeschold et al.

Summary: The study reveals that species of the genus Coleps exhibit high phenotypic plasticity and low genetic variability, with a facultative mutualistic relationship with their algal endosymbiont Micractinium conductrix. Only one species, C. viridis, was found in both lakes, suggesting a potential revision of the species concept within the genus Coleps in the future.
