Fire hazard analysis of Mediterranean Genista Salzmannii: Pyrolysis and kinetic characterization

Yassine Rahib et al.

Summary: This research aims to analyze the solid-state thermal degradation behavior and pyrolysis kinetics of Mediterranean Genista Salzmannii Needles (GSN) and provide information for wildland fire research. Proximate, ultimate, and microstructural analyses were conducted to characterize GSN. A thermogravimetric system coupled with Fourier Transform Infrared spectrometry (TG-FTIR) was used to analyze the pyrolytic behavior and gaseous products. The results showed that GSN has a high content of volatile and carbon. The cut GSN exhibited a higher mass loss rate than the grinded GSN during pyrolysis. CO2, C=O bond, C=C bond, C-H and/or C-O bond, aliphatic C-H (CH4), and H2O were the dominant gases released during pyrolysis. The kinetic analysis revealed that the cut GSN had slightly higher average apparent activation energy (E-alpha) than the grinded GSN. The thermal decomposition of hemicellulose and cellulose was best described by random nucleation and nucleation growth mechanisms, while char formation was consistent with the high-order reaction model. The simulated data showed good agreement with the experimental data.

The structural evolution characteristics for high volatile bituminous coal by in-situ heating in electronical microscope

Yan Shao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the aromatic layer arrangement and structural evolution characteristics of high volatile bituminous coal using HRTEM and TG-MS. The results showed that the arrangement of aromatic layers changed from disordered to well-aligned and then to disordered again with increasing temperature. The naphthalene structure exhibited the most obvious variation. The evolution of aromatic structure was found to be complex and closely related to gaseous generation characteristics.

Pyrolysis of 3D printed polylactic acid waste: A kinetic study via TG-FTIR/GC-MS analysis

Fan Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the pyrolysis characteristics of 3D printed PLA waste (3DP-PLAW) using TG-FTIR/GC-MS and found two main pyrolysis stages, with the occurrence of the second stage attributed to changes in the physicochemical properties of PLA during 3D printing. It was also found that 3DP-PLAW had a higher heating value than raw PLA, highlighting its potential value for energy recovery.

Free-radical polymerization of 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) supported by a high electric field

Wenkang Tu et al.

Summary: In the field of macromolecular science, there has been much research focused on tuning basic polymer parameters, but less attention has been paid to the impact of external stimuli on polymer properties. In this study, we successfully synthesized polymers with special properties by using a high electric field to support thermally-induced free-radical polymerization.

Thermal decomposition behavior and mechanism study of cationic polyacrylamide

Summary: The thermal decomposition behavior of polyacrylamide poly (methacryloyloxyethyl trimethylammonium chloride-acrylamide) (P(DMC-AM)) was studied using TG and DSC, revealing that an increase in cationicity led to higher thermal stability for P(DMC-AM). The evolved gases during degradation were analyzed using TG coupled with FTIR and MS, and a possible thermal composition mechanism was proposed and validated, providing useful information for expanding innovative applications.

Effect of the oxygen concentration on the combustion of asphalt binder

Kai Zhu et al.

Summary: The oxygen concentration significantly influences the combustion process of asphalt, especially in the combustion of heavy components. With lower oxygen concentration, the residual mass increases, the combustion temperature zone shifts higher, and the thermal reaction lag effect becomes more pronounced.

Study on Pyrolysis Behavior of Bio-based adenine containing phthalonitrile resin obtained by powder metallurgy-like process

Xiaoyun Guo et al.

Summary: The pyrolysis behaviors of bio-based adenine containing phthalonitrile resin (ADCN) processed by powder metallurgy-like process were studied through various analytical techniques. The pyrolysis process was divided into four stages, with the release of various small molecular compounds including a higher amount of HCN compared to other systems. As temperature increased, the structure of carbon material changed gradually, which could benefit its application in the electrical field.
