Solar pyrolysis of biomass- part II: The physicochemical structure evolution of char

Dian Zhong et al.

Summary: In this study, dynamic solar pyrolysis experiments were conducted on willow pellets to investigate the physicochemical structure evolution of char. The results showed that the reflectivity of char surface initially decreased and then rebounded, while the specific surface area decreased with reaction time. Three-dimensional scanning revealed unique hierarchical layers in the char structure. The chemical structure evolution resulted in the formation of aromatic rings and enhanced surface ordering. The differences in structure can be attributed to the poor heat and mass transfer properties of the lamellar structure.

Regulation of the elemental distribution in biomass by the torrefaction pretreatment using different atmospheres and its influence on the subsequent pyrolysis behaviors

Ruixia Li et al.

Summary: Different torrefaction atmospheres were used to pretreat biomass, resulting in variations in element distribution such as carbon, oxygen, and nitrogen content. The type of atmosphere affected the subsequent pyrolysis behaviors, with NH3 atmosphere showing distinctive characteristics due to Maillard reactions and nitrogen incorporation.

Effect of oxidative torrefaction on high temperature combustion process of wood sphere

Xin Li et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that oxidative torrefaction (OT) affects the combustion process of wood spheres, increasing char yield and combustion time while forming a more cross-linked aromatic structure that hinders volatile release, resulting in denser and heavier char particles. The findings suggest that mass yield serves as a good indicator for both OT and traditional inert torrefaction processes.

Investigation of the relevance between thermal degradation behavior and physicochemical property of cellulose under different torrefaction severities

Xiaobing Cao et al.

Summary: Torrefaction pretreatment can effectively reduce the oxygen content in biomass and enhance the carbon content and higher heating value of cellulose. Among the different pretreatment severities studied, treatment at 290°C was found to be the most effective in removing oxygen and improving the properties of cellulose.

Prediction of yields and composition of char from fast pyrolysis of commercial lignocellulosic materials, organosolv fractionated and torrefied olive stones

Duarte Magalhaes et al.

Summary: This study investigated the fast pyrolysis behavior of torrefied olive stones, fractionated olive stones, and lignocellulosic commercial compounds. The results showed that fractionated olive stones provided more accurate predictions of char yields compared to commercial lignocellulosic compounds. Fractionation at 180 degrees Celsius without acid catalyst yielded cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin with the highest degree of purity and resulted in the most accurate predictions of experimental yields of olive stones.
