Enhanced hydrogen properties of MgH2 by Fe nanoparticles loaded hollow carbon spheres

Pawan K. Soni et al.

Summary: In this study, the synergistic effect of Fe nanoparticles and hollow carbon spheres composite on the hydrogen storage properties of MgH2 was investigated. The MgH2-Fe-HCS system exhibited an onset desorption temperature of 225.9 degrees C and a hydrogen storage capacity of 5.60 wt%. The MgH2-Fe-HCS composite absorbed 5.60 wt% hydrogen within 55 s and desorbed 5.50 wt% hydrogen within 12 min under 20 atm H2 pressure at 300 degrees C. The desorption activation energy of MgH2-Fe-HCS was found to be 84.9 kJ/mol. The composite also showed better cyclability up to 24 cycles of hydrogenation and dehydrogenation of MgH2.

Li Ren et al.

Summary: In this study, 2D TiO2 nanosheets with abundant oxygen vacancies were used to fabricate a flower-like MgH2/TiO2 heterostructure with enhanced hydrogen storage performances. The heterostructure exhibited improved hydrogen desorption temperature, desorption rate, and capacity retention. The synergistic effects of multi-valance of Ti species, accelerated electron transportation caused by oxygen vacancies, formation of catalytic Mg-Ti oxides, and stabilized MgH2 NPs confined by TiO2 nanosheets contributed to the high stability and kinetically accelerated hydrogen storage performances of the composite. The strategy of using 2D substrates with abundant defects to support nano-sized energy storage materials to build heterostructure is promising for the design of high-performance energy materials.

Enhanced hydrogen storage performance of magnesium hydride with incompletely etched Ti3C2Tx: The nonnegligible role of Al

Haiguang Gao et al.

Summary: The hydrogen storage performance of MgH2 has been significantly enhanced by completely etched MXenes. However, the necessity of completely removing Al and the role of residual Al are still unresolved. This study prepared Ti3C2Tx MXenes with different residual Al and found that the proper residual Al has a crucial responsibility for improving catalytic activity. The Ti-Al metallic bonds assisted by surface functional group (-O) can change the electronic structure of Al, hindering the formation of Mg-Al alloys and enhancing the absorption of H atoms on the catalyst. The de/hydrogenation process of MgH2 can also be enhanced by multivalent Ti. This report draws attention to partially etched MXenes and provides a new strategy for optimizing MXenes in various fields.
