Hydrogen Trapping Characteristics and Mechanical Degradation in a Duplex Stainless Steel

Dae Geon Lee et al.

Summary: We investigated the behavior of hydrogen and its effect on mechanical properties in duplex stainless steel under different charging conditions. In the ex-situ condition, hydrogen uptake increased linearly with charging time, with trapping mainly occurring at dislocations and grain boundaries in the ferrite phase. However, with prolonged charging time, trapping also occurred at the ferrite-austenite interface. In the in-situ condition, hydrogen uptake was accelerated and penetration into the steel interior was deeper, which was attributed to transport through gliding dislocations. The loss of elongation in the duplex stainless steel became less sensitive to hydrogen content as charging time increased, indicating a remarkable resistance to hydrogen embrittlement compared to conventional high strength steels.

Effect of Zn-Coating Process on Liquid Metal Embrittlement of TRIP Steel

Doyub Kim et al.

Summary: This study investigated the microstructural evolution of TRIP steel sheets prepared by different coating processes and their sensitivity to liquid metal embrittlement (LME). The results showed that the coating process influenced the Fe-Zn reaction, which controlled the contact between the steel substrate and liquid Zn alloy at high temperatures. The electro-galvanized TRIP steel exhibited the highest resistance to LME, while the continuously galvanized steel was the most susceptible.

Effects of Al-Si coating structures on bendability and resistance to hydrogen embrittlement in 1.5-GPa-grade hot-press-forming steel

Jisung Yoo et al.

Summary: In this study, the Al-Si coating structures were modified to improve the hydrogen emission and enhance the bendability of hot-press-forming (HPF) steels. The results showed that immersion in an Al-10%Si bath and subsequent HPF process produced a 33 μm-thick multiple coating structure, consisting of Fe2Al5, FeAl, and ferrite layers, while the reduced Al-Si adhesion and increased time and temperature produced a 30 μm-thick body-centered-cubic (BCC)-based coating structure with FeAl and ferrite layers. The BCC-based crystal structure, reduced Al content in the FeAl layer, and coarsened ferrite grains effectively enhanced hydrogen diffusivity and suppressed hydrogen-induced degradation, while the softened FeAl and thick ferrite layers improved the bendability of the steel.

Suppression of Coating Layer Crack by Diffusion Heat Treatment in Al-Si Coated HPF Steels

Sang-Man Yun et al.

Summary: The effect of diffusion heat treatment on the cracking of the coating layer in Al-Si coated hot press forming steel was investigated. The introduction of diffusion heat treatment modified the microstructure and constituent phase in the coating layer, reducing cracking. The heat treatment also improved the toughness of the coating layer and reduced crack density, without significantly affecting the mechanical properties of the base steel.

3D Fe-Rich Phases Evolution and Its Effects on the Fracture Behavior of Al-7.0Si-1.2Fe Alloys by Mn Neutralization

Dong-Fu Song et al.

Summary: The evolution of 3D Fe-rich phases in Al-7.0Si-1.2Fe alloys with different Mn contents was characterized using synchrotron X-ray computed tomography. The addition of Mn changed the morphology of Fe-rich phase and reduced its volume fraction, while high Mn content led to decreased ductility of the alloy.

Study on hydrogen embrittlement and reversibility of hot-stamped aluminized 22MnB5 steel

Yi Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the hydrogen embrittlement behavior of ultrahigh strength hot-stamped aluminized 22MnB5 steel. The research found that the charging current density influenced the fracture mechanism, with low current density leading to quasi-cleavage fracture and high current density inhibiting hydrogen-induced cracking and promoting the reversibility of hydrogen embrittlement.

Improvement in hot dip galvanized coating microstructure and properties by pre-metallic deposition on steel surface: A comprehensive review

Anindita Chakraborty et al.

Summary: The product and process of batch and continuous galvanizing have undergone significant changes in the past two decades due to the demand for high strength and advanced high strength steels, as well as stringent requirements for surface quality, formability, and corrosion performance from end customers. The major concerns in galvanizing research are excessive coating growth in batch galvanizing, leading to excessive zinc consumption, and selective oxidation of alloying elements in high strength steels, leading to bare spot defects in continuous galvanizing. The application of pre-coatings has become important in addressing these long-standing industrial issues.

Effects of solid solution and grain-boundary segregation of Mo on hydrogen embrittlement in 32MnB5 hot-stamping steels

Jisung Yoo et al.

Summary: The addition of Mo can reduce the effects of hydrogen embrittlement in 32MnB5 steel and improve its resistance by decreasing hydrogen diffusivity and changing crack propagation path. Experimental results show that the addition of Mo significantly reduces ductility loss in H-charged steel, indicating higher hydrogen embrittlement resistance.

Summary: The research mainly focused on diffusible hydrogen in aluminum-silicon-coated hot-stamped boron steel and in the pre-treatment sequential lines of the automotive manufacturing process. Findings showed that during the hot stamping process, as soaking time increased in the heating furnace, the absorption of hydrogen in hot-stamped boron steel also increased.

Changkyu Kim et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the enhanced corrosion performance of Al-Si-Mg coated 22MnB5 boron steel after hot-dip-aluminizing and hot-press-forming processes. Structural changes in the coating, including a more compact surface with Mg segregation and a thicker crack-free layer, contribute to higher polarization resistance and improved anti-corrosion performance, making Al-Si-Mg coating a potential alternative for hot-press-forming steel.
