A novel B-Si-Zr hybridized ceramizable phenolic resin and the thermal insulation properties of its fiber-reinforced composites

Yi Xin et al.

Summary: A novel B-Si-Zr hybridized ceramicizable resin(BSZ-PR) was successfully fabricated by chemical reaction of boric acid, zirconium hydroxyl-containing polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane(Zr-POSS) and phenolic. The incorporation of boric acid and Zr-POSS improved the thermal stability of the resin effectively, and the flexural strength of carbon fiber/BSZ-PR and high silica fiber/BSZ-PR composites were increased significantly. Formation of ceramic structures such as SiO2, ZrO2 and SiC at high temperatures and extreme ablative conditions from BSZ-PR and its composites may be the key to the improved thermal, ablative properties.

Enhanced flexibility and ablative performance of silicone rubber by constructing an interpenetrating zirconium-containing polysiloxane double network

Jinfeng Tian et al.

Summary: In order to achieve uniform distribution of heteroatoms in silicone rubber and improve flexibility and ablation resistance, polydimethylsiloxane with an interpenetrating zirconium-containing double-network (Zr-PDMS) was prepared. Zr-PDMS showed significantly enhanced flexibility with increased tensile strength and elongation-at-break. It also exhibited excellent anti-ablation performance with decreased mass ablation rate and charring rate, forming stable and coherent charred layers after ablation tests.

Summary: In this study, boron-phenolic resin (BPR) composites were modified with various loadings of mesophase pitch (MP) to improve their mechanical performance, ablation resistance, and thermal insulation properties. The introduction of MP effectively prevented the growth of microcracks and increased the proportion of micropores and graphitic structures in the residual char, resulting in improved ablation and insulation properties of the composites.

Shear Ablation Behavior and Mechanism of Liquid Silicone Rubber Composites at Different Ablation Angles and Distances

Liwei Yan et al.

Summary: The study examined the shear ablation behavior of liquid silicone rubber composites (LSRCs) using an oxyacetylene flame at different ablation angles and distances. Computational fluid dynamic simulations showed that ablation morphology varied significantly with angles, and shear ablation resulted in augmented ablation rates and asymmetric ablation craters. The acceleration was mainly attributed to powerful mechanical denudation induced by intense gas flow, disrupting continuity of the molten liquid layer and leading to quicker elimination of ablated boundary.

Polymer derived ZrO2 reinforced SiC-ZrB2 polycrystalline fiber

Peng Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, a ZrO2 reinforced SiC-ZrB2 polycrystalline fiber was successfully prepared at a low temperature using the polymer-derived ceramic method. The formation of t-ZrO2 at relatively low temperature and the generation of high-quality fiber products after heat treatment were the most interesting findings. This study provides a novel method for the fabrication of SiC-based polycrystalline fiber at a low temperature.

Ablation resistance of resin matrix composites modified with different MAX-phase materials

Summary: In this study, carbon-phenolic composites modified with Ti3SiC2 and Ti3AlC2 were prepared, and their ablation behavior was investigated. The addition of Ti3AlC2 particles significantly reduced the linear ablation rate and formed a protective coating during ablation. Ti3AlC2 showed better modification effect than Ti3SiC2, and increasing the volume ratio of resin and Ti3AlC2 particles further enhanced the ablation resistance.

Thermal insulation and char layer mechanical properties of a novel ethylene propylene diene monomer composite reinforced with carbon nanotubes coated via chemical vapour deposition

Kun Xi et al.

Summary: This study proposes a solution to the reduced thermal insulation performance caused by carbon nanotubes (CNTs) in composite insulation materials, by pre-coating the CNTs with a carbon layer. The experimental results show that the coated-CNTs formulation significantly reduces thermal conductivity and improves the char layer strength of the insulation material. Overall, the coated-CNTs not only enhance the thermal insulation performance by reducing thermal conductivity, but also improve particle erosion resistance by strengthening the char layer.
