Improved catalytic performance of ZnO via coupling with CoFe2O4 and carbon nanotubes: A new, photocatalysis-mediated peroxymonosulfate activation system, applied towards Cefixime degradation

Summary: In this study, a ternary ZnO@spinel cobalt ferrite@carbon nanotube magnetic photocatalyst (ZSCF@CNT) was synthesized and used for Cefixime (CFX) antibiotic degradation under UVC irradiation. The ZSCF@CNT photocatalyst showed superior catalytic activity compared to individual components and binary composite catalysts, rapidly removing CFX under UVC irradiation and PMS. The optimal conditions for catalytic activity were pH 7.0, catalyst concentration 0.3 g/L, and PMS concentration 3.0 mM, resulting in complete elimination of CFX (10 mg/L) in about 20 minutes.

Bisphenol A degradation by peroxymonosulfate photo-activation coupled with carbon-based cobalt ferrite nanocomposite: Performance, upgrading synergy and mechanistic pathway

Summary: Cobalt ferrite nanoparticles anchored on multiwalled carbon nanotubes were used to synthesize a nanocomposite for enhanced catalytic activity towards the degradation of bisphenol A through photo-activated peroxymonosulfate. The combination of catalyst, UV light, and PMS showed a significant synergy in the degradation of BPA, exhibiting high removal efficiencies within a short reaction time. The presence of radical mechanisms and stable leaching of metal ions confirmed the potential of this method for efficient treatment of BPA-contaminated water.

Efficient degradation of metronidazole with dual-cathode of acetylene black-PTFE/CoFe2O4-PTFE coupling persulfate

Summary: In this study, a composite electrochemical oxidation system combining Electro-Fenton and persulfate (PS) was developed for the degradation of metronidazole in wastewater. The CoFe2O4-PTFE (CFOP) electrode was used in parallel with the acetylene black-PTFE electrode (ABP) as the dual-cathode of Electro-Fenton, and then coupled with PS to achieve synergistic degradation of metronidazole. The system exhibited high removal efficiency, good stability, and recyclability. Radical quenching and toxicity analysis confirmed the degradation mechanism of metronidazole.

Fe2O3-sensitized SnO2 nanosheets via atomic layer deposition for sensitive formaldehyde detection

Summary: Fe2O3-sensitized SnO2 nanosheets were designed via atomic layer deposition (ALD) to achieve high performance formaldehyde detection, showcasing the influence of different Fe2O3 loading on sensing performance. The sensor exhibited the best response and fast response and recovery dynamics to 20 ppm formaldehyde at a relative low temperature, along with good selectivity and low limit of detection. This work provides insights for designing efficient MOS heterostructures for formaldehyde detection.

Summary: A new mesoporous Ag/ZnO@NiFe2O4 nanorod was prepared using a facile, low-cost, and environmentally friendly strategy as an effective catalyst and peroxymonosulfate (PMS) photo-activator for ACT degradation. The catalyst showed high catalytic activity and efficient degradation of ACT due to the formation of a hetero-junction structure with NiFe2O4 and ZnO, as well as the presence of Fe3+/Fe2+ and Ni2+/Ni3+ reaction cycles enhancing the PMS activation rate. The study also proposed a plausible mechanism for the photocatalytic degradation of ACT based on LC-MS analysis of the reaction intermediates.
