Surface Stabilization of Cobalt-Free LiNiO2 with Niobium for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Seamus Ober et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that incorporating a small amount of niobium effectively suppresses the structural and surface degradation of lithium nickel oxide, resulting in higher capacity retention during cycling. The niobium treatment forms a surface coating of LixNbOy phase, reducing active material loss over long-term cycling and improving lithium-ion diffusion kinetics. The enhanced structural integrity and electrochemical performance of the niobium-treated lithium nickel oxide are due to the reduction in the formation of nanopore defects during cycling compared to untreated lithium nickel oxide.

Synthesis and characterization of Nickel-rich layered LiNi1-xMnxO2 (x=0.02,0.05) cathodes for lithium-ion batteries

Yasong Wang et al.

Summary: LiNi0.95Mn0.05O2 binary material with a better layered structure and lower Li-Ni mixing ratio demonstrates excellent electrochemical performance compared to LiNiO2. The stability of Mn4+ and the presence of stable layered structure and lithium-ion diffusion channel contribute to its superior lithium-ion conductivity and structural integrity.

Cobalt-free concentration-gradient Li[Ni0.9Mn0.1]O2 cathode material for lithium-ion batteries

Shan Zhang et al.

Summary: The cathodes of LiNiO2, Li[Ni0.9Mn0.1]O2, and the concentration gradient material Li[Ni0.9Mn0.1]O2 were synthesized by co-precipitation method. Tests showed that the gradient material G-LNM91 exhibited the best cycle performance among the three materials, with significant improvement in cycle performance due to manganese substitution.

Recent Development of Nickel-Rich and Cobalt-Free Cathode Materials for Lithium-Ion Batteries

Lukman Noerochim et al.

Summary: The exponential growth in production of electric vehicles has led to an increased demand for low-cost, high-performance lithium-ion batteries. However, concerns over the availability of cobalt, a high-cost and rare material used in high-nickel cathodes, may impact the price due to supply constraints. Developing cobalt-free high-nickel cathode materials, such as LiNi1-x-yMnxAlyO2, is necessary to address the reliance on cobalt and its high cost.
