Heterostructured materials

Yuntian Zhu et al.

Summary: Heterostructured materials are a new class of materials composed of heterogeneous zones with dramatically different properties. They exhibit superior mechanical or physical properties that surpass their conventional homogenous counterparts. This review focuses on the structural heterostructured materials, which achieve their superior mechanical properties through hetero-deformation induced strengthening and work hardening. The unique deformation behavior of these materials, along with their wide application potential, is driving the rapid development of the field.

Activating dispersed strain bands in tensioned nanostructure layer for high ductility: The effects of microstructure inhomogeneity

Yanfei Wang et al.

Summary: This study explores the influence of microstructure inhomogeneity on the plastic behavior of nanostructured layers. It is found that the intra-layer microstructure inhomogeneity leads to the formation of dispersed strain bands, while the inter-layer inhomogeneity stabilizes these strain bands and suppresses strain localization. Additionally, by activating hierarchical nanotwinning and dislocation activity, the nanostructured layer exhibits ductility and further work hardening.

Heterogeneous microstructure enables a synergy of strength, ductility and electrical conductivity in copper alloys

Zhenmin Lai et al.

Summary: A strategy based on constructing heterogeneous microstructures has been proposed to overcome the trade-off between electrical conductivity, strength, and ductility in copper alloys. By preparing heterostructured Cu-Cr-Zr alloys via powder metallurgy, with micrometer-scale pure copper grains embedded in a matrix of ultrafine copper grains with nanoscale precipitates, high ultimate tensile strength, considerable ductility, and excellent electrical conductivity have been achieved.

Nucleation and growth of nanoscale precipitates and the effect on properties during secondary isothermal aging in thin-band of Cu-0.8Cr-0.1Zr alloy

Zhiguo Wang et al.

Summary: The precipitation behavior during secondary isothermal aging of Cu-0.8Cr-0.1Zr alloy, especially the nucleation and growth of nanoscale body-centered cubic (bcc) Cr and orthogonal Cu4Zr precipitates, were clarified through high-resolution crystal structure and atomic-scale composition analysis. The results showed that the precipitation of Cr and Zr was in a coherent orientation relationship (OR) with the Cu-based matrix. The Cr precipitates gradually transformed into a stable bcc structure, while the Zr precipitates evolved into stable Cu4Zr with an orthogonal structure. The dispersed nanoscale precipitates induced by the secondary aging contributed to improved comprehensive properties of the alloy.

Improved strength with good conductivity in Cu-Cr-Zr alloys: Determinant effect of under-aging treatment before rolling and aging

Y. D. Wang et al.

Summary: Proper under-aging pre-treatment before rolling in Cu-Cr-Zr alloys helps to achieve better mechanical properties, significantly increasing the ultimate tensile strength. In addition, avoiding re-dissolution and refinement of precipitates can reduce the abnormal decrease in electrical conductivity.

Study on the variation of properties of Cu-Cr-Zr alloy by different rolling and aging sequence

Jiazhi Li et al.

Summary: The study revealed the relationship between the rolling-aging sequence and the microstructure evolution, mechanical-electrical properties of a hot rolled-quenched Cu-0.67Cr-0.27Zr-0.12Ni-0.03Si-0.04Ti alloy. A good combination of strength and electrical conductivity was achieved in the alloy through a specific aging-rolling-aging process, with strength improvement mainly attributed to dislocation density strengthening.

Microstructural evolution and strengthening mechanisms in cold-rolled Cu-Ag alloys

Mingwang Xie et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigated the microstructural evolution and strengthening mechanisms of pure copper and Cu-Ag alloys subjected to cold rolling. The results showed that dislocation strengthening and boundary strengthening were the dominant mechanisms in cold-rolled Cu-Ag alloys, with the addition of silver leading to higher steady-state strength due to increased concentration of dislocations and subgrain boundaries, and a larger volume fraction of high-strength eutectic colonies in Cu-15Ag compared to Cu-10Ag.

Shear localization in metallic materials at high strain rates

Na Yan et al.

Summary: The development of adiabatic shear localization is governed by three factors: strain hardening (or softening), strain-rate hardening, and thermal softening. In metallic materials, the formation and evolution of adiabatic shear bands at the nano and micro scale are associated with the transformation of grains, and modern experimental and computational techniques provide a deeper and predictive understanding of this phenomenon.
