Defect Engineering of Carbons for Energy Conversion and Storage Applications

Defect engineering can modulate the structures and electronic properties of carbon materials, leading to unexpected electrochemical performances. This review examines recent advances in defect engineering of carbon materials for energy conversion and storage, including types, regulation strategies, characterization means, and their applications in supercapacitors, rechargeable batteries, and electrocatalysis. The perspectives for the future development of defect engineering carbon materials are also proposed.

Morphology-dependent solvothermal synthesis of spinel NiCo2O4 nanostructures for enhanced energy storage device application

Summary: A facile solvothermal approach was used to synthesize various nanostructures of spinel NiCo2O4 as electrode materials for supercapacitors. Among them, NiCo2O4 nanoflowers (NC-2) showed the highest specific capacitance and excellent cycling stability. The superior performance of NiCo2O4 nanoflowers was attributed to their larger surface area, higher number of active sites, and lower charge transfer resistance.

Coupling of self-healing atomic layer CoAl-LDH onto Mo:BiVO4 photoanode for fast surface charge transfer toward stable and high-performance water splitting

Summary: A Mo-doping BiVO4/ultrathin-CoAl-LDH (Mo:BVO/CoAl-LDH-u) photoanode with self-healing property is designed by using atomic layer CoAl-LDH as cocatalyst to modify Mo:BVO through dipping coating. The Mo:BVO/CoAl-LDH-u photoanode exhibits excellent surface charge separation efficiency and photocurrent density of 5.8 mA/cm2 without scavengers. CoAl-LDH-u enhances surface charge transfer efficiency and promotes the oxygen evolution reaction rate in Mo:BiVO4, while the self-healing property of Mo:BVO/CoAl-LDH-u allows for natural restoration of photoelectrochemical performance. This work provides a facile approach for fabricating high-efficiency BiVO4 photoelectrodes for PEC water splitting.

Zinc doping effect on the structural and electrochemical properties of LaCoO3 perovskite as a material for hybrid supercapacitor electrodes

Summary: A series of LaCo1-xZnxO3 perovskite-type oxides (0 <= x <= 0.1) were successfully synthesized via the sol-gel process. The zinc doping significantly improved the electrochemical properties of LaCoO3, with LaCo0.95Zn0.05O3 demonstrating a four-fold increase in specific capacitance compared to the undoped electrode. A hybrid supercapacitor combining LaCo0.95Zn0.05O3 with activated carbon achieved a high energy density of 36.12 Wh.kg-1 and a capacitance retention of 81% after 5000 charge-discharge cycles at 5 A/g.

Construction of NiCo2O4@CNPs core-shell nanocomposites with 2D leaf-like structure for high-performance supercapacitor

Summary: The exploitation of NiCo2O4-based composite electrode materials with enhanced properties is crucial for high-performance supercapacitors. In this study, ultrathin NiCo2O4 nanosheets wrapped carbon nano-plates (NiCo2O4@CNPs) were prepared through co-precipitation method and thermal annealing treatment. The NiCo2O4@CNPs exhibited superior electrochemical properties compared to bare CNPs, bare NiCo2O4, and other NiCo2O4-based materials reported in literature. The NiCo2O4@CNPs electrode demonstrated high specific capacitance, remarkable rate capability, excellent cycling stability, and high energy and power densities, indicating its potential as an electrode material for high-performance supercapacitors.

Engineered perovskite LaCoO3/rGO nanocomposites for asymmetrical electrochemical supercapacitor application

Delocalizing the d-electrons spin states of Mn site in MnO2 for anion-intercalation energy storage

Summary: We report the engineering of delocalized d-electrons spin states of the Mn site in MnO2 through simple Ni doping (Ni-MnO2), which greatly enhances the Na+ storage performance. Ni-MnO2 exhibits a high capacity and excellent rate capability, outperforming MnO2. The theoretical simulations suggest that the delocalized d-electrons spin states of the Mn site lower the Na+ transfer energy barrier and improve electronic conductivity. The accelerated electron/ion transfer kinetics of Ni-MnO2 are further demonstrated using a Ni-MnO2-based asymmetric supercapacitor.
