Direct additive manufacturing of TiCp reinforced Al2O3-ZrO2 eutectic functionally graded ceramics by laser directed energy deposition

Dongjiang Wu et al.

Summary: Laser directed energy deposition (LDED) was used to manufacture TiCp reinforced Al2O3-ZrO2 eutectic functionally graded ceramics with two different transition modes for the first time. The results show that the gradient transition leads to a gradual increase of TiCp particles in the Al2O3-ZrO2 eutectic matrix. With increased TiCp content, the morphology of the eutectic matrix changes from lamellar or rod-shaped to irregular shape. LDED also enables controllable fabrication of properties in different positions of the gradient materials, with a 43.4% increase in wear resistance in TiCp rich regions compared to pure Al2O3-ZrO2 region.

Investigate the effect of arc characteristic on the mechanical properties of 5A56 Al alloy in CMT arc additive manufacturing

Liang Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of arc characteristic on the mechanical properties of 5A56 Al alloy in wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM). Three different arc processes (CMT, CMT-VP, and CMT-P) were used, and their impact on arc behavior, droplet transfer, heat input, microstructure, and mechanical properties were analyzed. The CMT-VP process exhibited better thermal management ability with higher deposition rate and well-formed specimens. The microstructure of CMT-VP specimens had finer and more uniform equiaxed grains, leading to improved mechanical properties compared to CMT and CMT-P processes.

Mechanism of grain refinement and mechanical property enhancement of Ti-45Al-8Nb alloy by directed laser deposition

Tengda Di et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the interactions between semi-coherent interfaces, deformation twins, and dislocations in Ti-45Al-8Nb alloy specimens manufactured by DLD. The results reveal the strengthening mechanism of interlamellar spacing on mechanical properties and indicate that laser power is an important factor affecting the interlamellar spacing. By adjusting the laser power, the interlamellar spacing decreases by 40.1%, leading to increased microhardness and tensile strength of the alloy. The obstruction and absorption of dislocation motion by the lamellar interface and deformation twins contribute to the improved mechanical properties.

In-situ observation of microcrack initiation and damage nucleation modes on the HAZ of laser-welded DP1180 joint

Junliang Xue et al.

Summary: In-situ SEM is used to observe microstructural and microcrack changes in the deformation process. This paper discusses the microstructural evolution, mechanical properties, and damage nucleation modes of DP1180 laser welded joints using TEM, FIB, and in-situ tensile test. The mechanical properties of tempered martensite in the sub-critical heat affected zone (SCHAZ) were deteriorated due to the precipitation of carbides and disappearance of dislocations tangles, resulting in slight decrease in microhardness (approximately 27HV) and the development of a softened zone. Microcracks initiated from tempered martensite in the SCHAZ while microcrack initiation of the base material occurred at the ferrite/martensite interface. Tempered martensite cracking was the dominant damage nucleation mode in the joint, while ferrite/martensite interface decohesion was the dominant mode in the base material.

Long-lasting action mechanism of 3D skeleton regulated the residual stress fluctuations in SiCf/SiC heterogeneous joints

Yu Zhang et al.

Summary: SiCf/SiC composites can improve the operating temperature and thrust-weight ratio of aero-engines, and their effective joining with superalloys can solve the problem of poor machinability. In this study, graphene-reinforced Cu (G-Cu) foam was introduced as an energy-absorbing interlayer to relieve the residual stress in the brazed joint. The G-Cu foam played a protective role, and its foam structure remained intact, leading to good microstructure and improved performance.

Summary: This study develops a wire-based process of laser-arc hybrid additive manufacturing (LHAM) to fabricate aluminum alloys containing Sc. Compared with wire and arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) under two processing conditions, LHAM shows significantly improved surface quality and refined microstructure. LHAM also exhibits a higher and more stable microhardness distribution and exceptional elongation, indicating less anisotropy in mechanical properties.

One-step additive manufacturing of TiCp reinforced Al2O3-ZrO2 eutectic ceramics composites by laser directed energy deposition

Dongjiang Wu et al.

Summary: Laser directed energy deposition (LDED) is used to fabricate TiCp-reinforced Al2O3-ZrO2 eutectic ceramics, with different ratios of TiCp percentage investigated on their inhibitory mechanism on crack and porosity defects. The distribution of TiCp particles and the microstructure around them are influenced by the solidification rate. The mismatch of thermal expansion coefficient and elastic modulus between TiCp and Al2O3-ZrO2 eutectic matrix causes crack pinning and transgranular, while TiCp doping enhances molten pool impact and reduces porosity.

Comparative investigation of wire arc additive manufacturing of Al-5%Mg alloy with and without external alternating magnetic field

Wenyong Zhao et al.

Summary: In this investigation, an external longitudinal alternating magnetic field is introduced into the wire arc additive manufacturing system to optimize the fabrication quality of aluminum alloy. The study comprehensively examines the effects of the external magnetic field on the arc behavior, metal transfer, deposit morphology, microstructure, and mechanical properties of the WAAM process. The results show that the excitation current and frequency have significant influences on the process parameters and can improve the surface accuracy and microstructure uniformity of thin-wall parts.

Periodic microstructure of Al-Mg alloy fabricated by inter-layer hammering hybrid wire arc additive manufacturing: Formation mechanism, microstructural and mechanical characterization

Siyu Zhou et al.

Summary: Inter-layer plastic deformation is an effective method to improve the mechanical properties of wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) components. In this study, a periodic microstructure composed of alternate coarse and fine grain regions was obtained by applying the inter-layer hammering hybrid WAAM process. The grain size and dislocation density in the recrystallization region were significantly refined, leading to improved tensile properties. The best results were achieved when the inter-layer region was hammered 3 times.
