Phase transformation and amorphization resistance in high-entropy MAX phase M2SnC ( M = Ti, V, Nb, Zr, Hf) under in-situ ion irradiation

Shuang Zhao et al.

Summary: Chemical complexity significantly affects the structures and properties of materials. In this study, the radiation effects in high-entropy MAX phases were investigated, and it was found that high-entropy MAX phases exhibit better tolerance to irradiation-induced phase transformation and amorphization compared to Ti2SnC. The roles of chemical complexity in structural evolution were elucidated by ab initio calculations.

Effects of SMAT at cryogenic and room temperatures on the kink band and martensite formations with associated fatigue resistance in a β-metastable titanium alloy

Pierre Maurel et al.

Summary: SMAT treatment at cryogenic temperature can improve the fatigue resistance of 5553 beta-metastable Ti alloy by generating compressive residual stresses, reducing roughness, deepening martensite formation, and increasing the size of kink bands. Conversely, SMAT treatment at room temperature does not provide any improvement in fatigue performance, possibly due to the appearance of subsurface crystallographic defects caused by the larger grain size.

On the non-classical crystallographic slip in Tin+1AlCn MAX phases

Zhiqiang Zhan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the crystallographic slip behavior of a class of atomically layered ternary carbides, revealing that Ti3AlC2 exhibits non-classical crystallographic slip similar to Ti2AlC, but with a greater intrinsic critical resolved shear stress and smaller frictional resistance. These findings have implications for the macroscopic response of polycrystalline aggregates of these two MAX phases.

Physical properties of new MAX phase borides M2SB (M = Zr, Hf and Nb) in comparison with conventional MAX phase carbides M2SC (M = Zr, Hf and Nb): Comprehensive insights

M. A. Ali et al.

Summary: This article presents a detailed study of the recently synthesized MAX phase borides M2SB (M = Zr, Hf, and Nb) using first principles technique. Mechanical properties, optical properties, and thermal properties were investigated, with Nb2SB compound exhibiting the best combination of mechanical properties. The covalent and ionic bonding within these borides were explained, along with the anisotropic factors and optical constants.

Modelling Electron Channeling Contrast Intensity of Stacking Fault and Twin Boundary Using Crystal Thickness Effect

Hana Kriaa et al.

Summary: The study utilizes an original theoretical approach based on dynamical diffraction theory to analyze the contrast of defects using ECCI technique. The model allows for better understanding of channeling contrast in perfect and imperfect crystals, and explains the intensity oscillations observed in ECC micrographs.
