Self-diffusion coefficient and sound velocity of Fe-Ni-O fluid: Implications for the stratification of Earth's outer core

Wei-Jie Li et al.

Summary: It has been experimentally reported that the stratified layer atop Earth's outer core is several hundred kilometers thick and has a sound velocity reduction of 0.3% compared to the preliminary reference Earth model. However, the theoretical explanation for this reduction in sound velocity remains unclear. This paper investigates the role of Ni and O in the outer core on the stratification and sound velocity profile of Earth's core. Molecular dynamics simulations were performed on Fe-Ni-O fluid under conditions similar to Earth's outer core, and various properties such as self-diffusion coefficients and ion-ion dynamic structure factors were calculated. The results show that the Fe-Ni-O liquid on top of the outer core, with an appropriate thickness and reduced sound velocity, sheds light on the dynamic behavior of Earth's core.

New alloy design approach to inhibiting hot cracking in laser additive manufactured nickel-based superalloys

Yanan Zhao et al.

Summary: In this study, a new approach utilizing segregation engineering and liquid backfilling was introduced to eliminate hot cracking in laser additive manufacturing of alloys. The introduction of zirconium into a nickel-based superalloy formed a continuous interdendritic liquid film, and the decorated Ni11Zr9 segregation phase on cell boundaries effectively eliminated cracks. Moreover, the continuous Ni11Zr9 network layer significantly improved the yield strength of the as-printed samples and exhibited excellent mechanical properties after appropriate heat treatment.

Formation mechanism of ??-Mg5Si6 and its PFZ in an Al-Mg-Si-Mn alloy: Experiment and first-principles calculations

Xiaoming Qian et al.

Summary: The formation mechanism of beta-Mg5Si6 and its PFZ in an Al-Mg-Si-Mn alloy was investigated through experiment and first-principles calculations. It was found that beta-Mg5Si6 precipitated inside the dendrites during the heating process, while PFZs of beta-Mg5Si6 were observed near the dendrite arm regions. The formation of beta-Mg5Si6 and its PFZs were influenced by the concentration of vacancies, with low-concentration vacancy zones forming near the eutectics during solidification.

Global understanding of deformation behavior in CoCrFeMnNi high entropy alloy under high-strain torsion deformation at a wide range of elevated temperatures

Reza Gholizadeh et al.

Summary: In this study, the deformation behavior of the CoCrFeMnNi alloy under ultra-high strains at various temperatures was investigated. It was found that deformation twinning was extensively activated at moderate to high strains and at elevated temperatures above 600 degrees C. The alloy showed excellent deformability at low temperatures, but embrittlement occurred at intermediate temperatures. This research provides insights into the microstructure evolution and mechanical response of the Cantor alloy under shear deformation at a wide range of strains and temperatures.

Effect of silicon addition on phosphorus segregation at grain boundary and temper embrittlement of Fe-C-Mn-xSi steels

Kai Yang et al.

Summary: This study elucidates the influences of silicon content on phosphorus segregation at grain boundary and temper embrittlement in Fe-C-Mn-(0.33 to 2.07 wt%) Si low alloy steels based on microstructural and mechanical characterizations. The results show that increasing silicon content in steels improves ductility by inhibiting carbide precipitation during tempering at 550 degrees C, but also promotes the degree of phosphorus segregation at grain boundaries due to the repulsive interaction between silicon and phosphorus, which is the main reason for the deterioration of impact toughness. The experimental results provide new insights into temper embrittlement in steels with high silicon content.

Fracture behavior of cemented carbides with CoNiFe medium entropy alloy binder

Cheng Qian et al.

Summary: The study found that WC-CoNiFe has higher fracture toughness than WC-Co, and fracture toughness and fatigue crack growth are closely related to microstructural characteristics. The increase in fracture toughness is attributed to ductile ligament bridging and crack deflection as the mean free path of the binder phase increased or the contiguity of the carbide phase decreased. Furthermore, the dominant effect of maximum stress intensity factor on fatigue crack growth was observed, with a transition from brittle to ductile fracture modes as fracture toughness increased.
