FeCo alloys in-situ formed in Co/Co2P/N-doped carbon as a durable catalyst for boosting bioelectrons-driven oxygen reduction in microbial fuel cells

Xin Xu et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the preparation and performance of a non-noble metal catalyst for durable bioelectricity generation in air-cathode microbial fuel cells (MFCs). The nitrogen-doped (iron-cobalt alloy)/cobalt/cobalt phosphide/partly graphitized carbon catalyst exhibits high catalytic activity and stability towards oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The catalyst's structure and ORR activity are greatly influenced by the carbonization temperature. The catalyst with FeCo/Co/Co2P/NPGC composition and a carbonization temperature of 950 degrees C shows the highest power density, Coulombic efficiency, and lowest charge transfer resistance among the tested catalysts. The synergies between metallic components and N-doped carbon contribute to the improved ORR catalytic activity of the catalysts.
