Bacteriocins from lactic acid bacteria and their potential clinical applications

Abigail Fernandes et al.

Summary: Bacteriocins are antimicrobial peptides synthesized by ribosomes and widely used in the food industry. They have been recognized as a potential alternative to conventional antibiotics due to their diverse functions and mechanisms of action. Recent studies have found that bacteriocins from lactic acid bacteria can control bacterial and viral infections and may serve as potential contraceptives. However, further research is needed to obtain a deeper understanding of these bacteriocins.

Structural characterization and anti-photoaging activity of a polysaccharide from Sargassum fusiforme

Jinhong Hu et al.

Summary: In this study, a purified algal polysaccharide (P1) was isolated from Sargassum fusiforme and its structural characteristics and anti-photoaging activity were investigated. The results demonstrated that P1 had a high molecular weight and specific composition, and it could reduce collagen loss caused by UVB irradiation, as well as alleviate oxidative stress and inflammation response. Therefore, the polysaccharide P1 from Sargassum fusiforme showed potential as a functional food for relieving skin photoaging.

In-situ crosslinked hydrogel based on amidated pectin/oxidized chitosan as potential wound dressing for skin repairing

Jhaleh Amirian et al.

Summary: By adjusting the content of amine and aldehyde groups from AP and OC, the properties of the hydrogel can be controlled to have desirable gelation time, swelling capability, high hemocompatibility and biocompatibility. The AP-OC-65 hydrogel, in particular, stands out with superior swelling capability and better hemo- and bio-compatibility, showing great potential for applications in wound dressing or skin substitute.

Bacteriocins as a new generation of antimicrobials: toxicity aspects and regulations

Samira Soltani et al.

Summary: Bacteriocins have gained attention as antimicrobial compounds in recent decades, with potential applications in clinical settings and as immune-modulating agents. Despite their effectiveness against antibiotic-resistant bacteria, limited safety and toxicity data hinder their broader use in the food and medical industry. Nisin remains the only bacteriocin approved as a food preservative by regulatory agencies.
