Plant Protection against Viruses: An Integrated Review of Plant Immunity Agents

Min Huang et al.

Summary: Plant viruses are pathogens that significantly impact plant growth and crop production. Green pesticides are desirable due to their low resistance and eco-friendliness. Plant immunity agents play a crucial role in enhancing the resilience of the immune system in plants by regulating their metabolism. This paper reviews the antiviral molecular mechanisms, applications, and development of plant immunity agents, such as ningnanmycin, vanisulfane, dufulin, cytosinpeptidemycin, and oligosaccharins, and analyzes the trends and prospects of their use in plant protection.

A chitosan-coated lentinan-loaded calcium alginate hydrogel induces broad-spectrum resistance to plant viruses by activating Nicotiana benthamiana calmodulin-like (CML) protein 3

Shunyu Xiang et al.

Summary: Control of plant virus diseases often relies on synthetic chemical inducers, but the underlying molecular mechanisms are not well understood. In this study, a chitosan-coated lentinan-loaded hydrogel (CSL-gel) was developed and shown to protect plants from various virus infections. The CSL-gel exhibited the ability to sustain release lentinan and promote Ca2+ release. Application of CSL-gels on plant roots induced broad-spectrum resistance against plant viruses. Further analysis revealed that sustained release of Ca2+ from CSL-gel upregulated Nicotiana benthamiana calmodulin-like protein gene 3 (NbCML3), and modulating NbCML3 expression altered tobacco's susceptibility and resistance to TMV.

Cellulose nanocrystals for crop protection: leaf adhesion and controlled delivery of bioactive molecules

Like Ning et al.

Summary: The development of a pesticide carrier system based on plant-derived cellulose nanocrystals modified with beta-cyclodextrin and tannic acid is investigated. The carrier enables pH-controlled delivery of the pesticide fenitrothion through hydrophobic and hydrogen bonding interactions and Cu2+ coordination. The system shows efficient antifungal and insecticidal effects along with excellent biosafety, making it a promising approach for pesticide delivery.

Extraction of cellulose nanocrystals from agricultural by-products: a review

Kilole Tesfaye Chaka

Summary: In recent studies, the reuse, recycle, and recovery of biomass wastes for high value-added bioproducts have gained significant attention. This review provides a brief overview of the extraction of cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) from various agricultural wastes and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of common extraction methods. CNCs have been widely used in high-performance materials due to their lightweight, excellent mechanical strength, biocompatibility, biodegradability, renewability, high surface area, and tunable surface chemistry. The review also discusses the challenges in CNCs production, limitations in physicochemical properties and applications, and future prospects of CNCs.
