Transfer and toxicokinetic modeling of non-dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls (ndl-PCBs) into accidentally exposed dairy cattle and their calves-A case report

Jan-Louis Moenning et al.

Summary: This case report discusses three dairy cows accidentally exposed to non-dioxin-like PCBs (ndl-PCBs) on a German farm. The cows had significant levels of PCBs in their milk and blood, mainly consisting of PCBs 138, 153, and 180. A physiologically based toxicokinetic model was developed to understand the fate of ndl-PCBs in the animals, including transfer to calves via milk and placenta. The model was also used for risk assessment by estimating kinetic parameters.

Kinetics of PCDD/Fs from feed to cow milk and its implications for food safety

Yanfen Hao et al.

Summary: Guideline levels of PCDD/Fs have been recommended for food safety control, but the transfer effect from feed to food and the resulting human exposure risk have been less considered. Controlled feeding experiments were conducted on dairy cows to evaluate the kinetics of PCDD/Fs. The results showed that even though the PCDD/F level in feed met the EU regulations, the TEQ levels in milk and tissues exceeded the EU maximum level after one-week exposure. The study revealed the necessity for re-evaluation of regulations on pollutants in cow feed and cow-origin food in terms of biotransfer and bioaccumulation.

Transfer of polychlorinated, polybrominated and mixed-halogenated dioxins, furans and biphenyls, polychlorinated naphthalenes and alkanes, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and chlorobenzenes to the milk of dairy cattle from controlled ingestion of industrial and municipal bioresources recycled to agricultural land

Hannah Rigby et al.

Summary: Recycled bioresources were added to the feed of dairy cattle to study the transfer of organic contaminants to milk. Incorporating bioresources with soil at agronomic rates did not result in significant additional transfer of contaminants to milk. However, direct ingestion of biosolids by cattle significantly increased the transfer of contaminants to milk in comparison to control animals.

Accumulation and decontamination kinetics of PCBs and PCDD/Fs from grass silage and soil in a transgenerational cow-calf setting

Charlotte Driesen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of cow physiology on the transfer of PCBs and PCDD/Fs from grass silage and soil to cows' blood, adipose tissue, and milk, and subsequently to suckling calves. The results show that factors such as cow physiology, pollutant congener, and parity of the cow influence the transfer rates and half-lives of the pollutants.

Dioxins and furans in cow milk and dairy products: A review of the scientific literature

Jose L. Domingo

Summary: Polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) are persistent organic pollutants that have toxic effects and potential carcinogenicity. Human exposure to PCDD/Fs primarily occurs through food, including dairy products. The concentrations of PCDD/Fs in milk and dairy products are currently decreasing, which also leads to a decrease in their contribution to the total dietary intake of PCDD/Fs. Overall, significant health risks from consuming dairy products contaminated with PCDD/Fs are not expected.

The first German total diet study (BfR MEAL Study) confirms highest levels of dioxins and dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls in foods of animal origin

Mandy Stadion et al.

Summary: The first German Total Diet Study, the BfR MEAL Study, generated a comprehensive dataset of persistent organic pollutants in foods consumed by households in Germany. Animal-based foods showed the highest levels of contaminants, with a slight trend towards higher levels in organically produced foods. Region and season did not significantly impact the contaminant levels. The findings will improve future dietary exposure and food safety assessments in Germany.

Transfer of polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins and dibenzofurans (PCDD/Fs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) from oral exposure into cow's milk - Part I: state of knowledge and uncertainties

Torsten Krause et al.

Summary: Polychlorinated dibenzo-para-dioxins (PCDDs) and dibenzofurans (PCDFs), collectively known as 'dioxins', as well as polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) are persistent environmental contaminants that can enter the food chain and have chronic toxic effects in humans. Milk and dairy products are an important pathway for human exposure to these contaminants. Transfer of dioxins and PCBs from feed to milk has been studied, but there is still variability in the data. Factors such as experimental conditions, cow performance parameters, and metabolic state can influence the transfer. Further research is needed, especially considering the increase in milk yield in recent years.

Transfer of persistent organic pollutants in food of animal origin - Meta-analysis of published data

Farida Amutova et al.

Summary: The transfer of POPs in animal food products, particularly milk and eggs, and the bioconcentration factors in different tissues of animals have been studied. The results show that highly toxic PCDD/Fs and PCBs can transfer efficiently into milk, eggs, and liver. Differences in bioconcentration factors were observed in different studies, complicating the hierarchical analysis of tissues and congeners. High bioconcentration was also found for DDT and its metabolites.

The Dairy Cow Slurry Composition Used as Organic Fertilizer Is Influenced by the Level and Origin of the Dietary Protein

Fernando Vicente et al.

Summary: Dairy cattle contribute to ammonia emissions due to nitrogen excretion from their diet, reducing dietary nitrogen intake can help decrease nitrogen excretions and ammonia emissions. Legumes and grasses have different rates of protein degradation during the silage process, impacting nitrogen excretion.
