Decreased dorsal attention network homogeneity as a potential neuroimaging biomarker for major depressive disorder

Yujun Gao et al.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the changes in brain network homogeneity (NH) in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and determine the role of this parameter in differentiating between MDD patients and healthy controls. The results showed reduced NH in the left supramarginal gyrus (SMG) in MDD patients compared to healthy controls. Support vector machine analysis revealed that the NH of the left SMG could effectively differentiate between MDD patients and healthy controls with high accuracy, specificity, and sensitivity. These findings suggest that NH changes in the dorsal attention network may serve as a neuroimaging biomarker for distinguishing MDD patients from healthy individuals.

Maturation and circuit integration of transplanted human cortical organoids

Omer Revah et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the potential of transplanting self-organizing neural organoids derived from human stem cells into the somatosensory cortex of rats to develop mature cell types and integrate into sensory and motivation-related circuits. The transplanted cortical neurons exhibit more complex properties than their in vitro counterparts and can drive reward-seeking behavior when optogenetically activated. This approach has the potential to detect circuit-level phenotypes in patient-derived cells that cannot be uncovered using other methods.

Decreased resting-state neural signal in the left angular gyrus as a potential neuroimaging biomarker of schizophrenia: An amplitude of low-frequency fluctuation and support vector machine analysis

Yujun Gao et al.

Summary: This study found that patients with schizophrenia show reduced ALFF values in specific brain regions compared to healthy controls. The support vector machine (SVM) analysis identified that reductions in ALFF values in the bilateral precuneus (PCu) can effectively differentiate between schizophrenia patients and healthy controls.

Testing the validity and reliability of the Chinese version of the Staden schizophrenia anxiety rating scale

Chenyuan Du et al.

Summary: Accurate assessment of anxiety disorders and their symptoms in schizophrenic patients is crucial for prognosis and treatment. Traditional anxiety assessment scales are considered unsuitable for evaluating anxiety symptoms in patients with schizophrenia, while the S-SARS has shown reliability in measuring specified and undifferentiated anxiety in schizophrenia. This study tested the reliability and validity of the Chinese version of S-SARS and found that it demonstrated good structural validity and reliability, and better criterion validity compared to HAMA. The S-SARS and its Chinese version can serve as effective tools for assessing anxiety symptoms in schizophrenia.

Clinical and neuroimaging correlates of cardiorespiratory fitness in adolescents with bipolar disorder

Najla Popel et al.

Summary: The study found that adolescents with bipolar disorder had significantly lower cardiorespiratory fitness, particularly among women, which was related to depression symptoms and inactivity. Additionally, the research showed that CRF was differently associated with regional brain structure, and improving CRF may be a promising approach to reducing psychiatric symptoms of BD.

Peripheral inflammation is associated with dysfunctional corticostriatal circuitry and executive dysfunction in bipolar disorder patients

Huai-Hsuan Tseng et al.

Summary: Patients with bipolar disorder may be particularly sensitive to the effects of peripheral inflammation on corticostriatal connectivity, which may affect cognitive and reward-related corticostriatal circuitry, contributing to cognitive-affective dysregulation in the euthymic state. Therefore, anti-inflammatory or other circuit-specific treatments are warranted for individualized treatment in bipolar disorder.

Increased ALFF and functional connectivity of the right striatum in bipolar disorder patients

Zhifang Zhang et al.

Summary: The study revealed that BD patients exhibited increased ALFF in the right caudate/putamen and increased rsFC in the right caudate/putamen with the right inferior parietal lobe. Furthermore, euthymic BD patients showed similar abnormalities in ALFF and rsFC maps as found in all patients with BD. This suggests that the abnormality of spontaneous brain activity in the cortical-striatal neural circuits may be a trait-like variant in patients with BD.

Summary: Using graph theoretical methods with functional magnetic resonance imaging data, this study examined the topological organization of brain networks in bipolar disorder across different mood states. Abnormalities were found at the global, module, and nodal levels, particularly in the frontoparietal-limbic circuit, reflecting potential biomarkers of conversion between different mood states in bipolar disorder.

Different facial recognition patterns in schizophrenia and bipolar disorder assessed using a computerized emotional perception test and fMRI

Hyun Chan Hwang et al.

Summary: The study found that schizophrenic patients have lower emotional perception abilities compared to bipolar disorder patients, indicating disrupted emotional perception abilities are linked to altered brain functional connectivity. Schizophrenic patients show reduced usage of the frontal lobe, while bipolar patients compensate for facial emotion recognition using the parietal lobe.

DSM-5 and ICD-11 criteria for bipolar disorder: Implications for the prevalence of bipolar disorder and validity of the diagnosis-A narrative review from the ECNP bipolar disorders network

Lars Vedel Kessing et al.

Summary: This narrative review discusses the impact of DSM-5 and ICD-11 classification systems on the prevalence and validity of bipolar disorder diagnosis. It suggests a significant decrease in the point prevalence of bipolar disorder with DSM-5 compared to DSM-IV, but a smaller decrease in lifetime prevalence. Future research is needed to explore the implications of these diagnostic systems on bipolar disorder.
