Physicochemical properties and oxidation reactivity of exhaust soot from a modern diesel engine: Effect of oxyfuel type

Jiangjun Wei et al.

Summary: This study investigated the physicochemical properties of diesel engine soot emitted from different fuel blends, revealing the impacts of fuel formulation on soot nanostructure, chemical composition, and oxidation reactivity. The results showed that variations in fuel formulation led to differences in soot nanostructure, chemical composition, and oxidation reactivity, with surface oxygenated functional groups and nanostructure having a greater influence on soot reactivity.

Impact of multi-injection strategies on morphology, nanostructure and oxidation reactivity of diesel soot particles

Xingyu Liang et al.

Summary: The study found that pilot injection resulted in formation of soot particles with smaller size, more ordered nanostructure, and higher graphitization degree, while post injection led to particles with larger size, more OC content, and more ambiguous boundary. Generally, soot particles with disordered nanostructure and higher OC content exhibited better oxidation reactivity.

Effect of the oxidation-induced fragmentation of primary particles on soot oxidation reactivity

Ye Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of oxidation-induced fragmentation on the oxidation reactivity of diesel soot in a CH4 lean premixed flame. The results show that more particle fragmentation occurs during soot burnout, and the internal combustion leads to variations in physicochemical properties, resulting in increased oxidation reactivity of the soot particles.

Particle emissions from a marine diesel engine burning two kinds of sulphur diesel oils with an EGR & scrubber system: Size, number & mass

Zhanguang Wang et al.

Summary: IMO has implemented strict regulations to reduce marine diesel engine emissions. This paper investigates the use of an EGR system combined with a scrubber to reduce particulate matter emissions from a marine diesel engine. The results show that this system has a significant effect in removing particles and complies with emission standards in China and the US.

Impact of sulfur functional groups on physicochemical properties and oxidation reactivity of diesel soot particles

Bowen Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the physicochemical characteristics of soot particles generated from different fuels with high sulfur content on a marine auxiliary diesel engine. The results show that high sulfur content increases the concentrations of sulfur functional groups, sulfur element content, and primary particle size of soot particles. It is also observed that there are linear correlations between the concentrations of sulfur functional groups and the soot fringe length, as well as the oxidation activation energy. Additionally, metal-sulfates formed from the combination of sulfur with metal elements in fuel or lube oils enhance the oxidation of soot.

Properties and oxidation of in-cylinder soot associated with exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) in diesel engines

Wei Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the properties and oxidation of in-cylinder soot from a diesel engine fueled with n-heptane under simulated exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) conditions. It was found that EGR addition enhances the mass-based specific rate of soot oxidation, but reduces flame temperature and concentrations of O-2 and OH, leading to decreased soot surface oxidation rates. Additionally, the characterization of soot properties showed that EGR decreases structural ordering and results in the formation of more oxygenated and aliphatic C-H groups on the soot surface, favoring soot oxidation during combustion processes.

Effect of jet fuel aromatics on in-flame soot distribution and particle morphology in a small-bore compression ignition engine

Rongying Tian et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of fuel aromatic content on soot particle development inside the cylinder of an optically accessible engine. Higher aromatic fuel leads to earlier soot formation, higher growth rate, and increased peak soot and remaining soot measurements, but has little effect on reactions and flame development.

Impact of early injection on physicochemical characteristics of diesel soot particles

Xingyu Liang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effect of early injection on diesel soot particle characteristics, showing that as early injection advanced, primary particle size increased with more disordered nanostructure and lower graphitization degree. Results also indicated relatively more organic carbon (OC) and higher oxidation reactivity in the produced soot particles with advanced early injection.
