On flexural properties of additive manufactured composites: Experimental, and numerical study

David Krzikalla et al.

Summary: This study focused on experimental and numerical examination of the flexural properties of FDM long carbon fibre reinforced composites with polymeric matrix of Onyx through 3-point bending test. The reinforced layer distribution was found to be crucial over the fibre content, with comparable longitudinal material constants but dissimilar shear and transversal constants.

Experimental Characterization and Modeling of 3D Printed Continuous Carbon Fibers Composites with Different Fiber Orientation Produced by FFF Process

Federico Lupone et al.

Summary: This study investigates the microstructure and mechanical properties of 3D printed CCF/PA composites with different layups and applies predictive models. It found that longitudinal composites have the highest stiffness and strength, while cross-ply and quasi-isotropic laminates have lower properties. The reduction in tensile properties for these laminates can be described using the Angle Minus Longitudinal. The rupture mode of quasi-isotropic laminates mainly exhibits debonding between beads.

Effect of the fiber orientation on the tensile and flexural behavior of continuous carbon fiber composites made via fused filament fabrication

Alberto Parmiggiani et al.

Summary: This study aims to analyze the mechanical resistance of components made with continuous carbon fiber (CCF) thermoplastic materials using fused filament fabrication (FFF), with a focus on the influence of fiber orientation. Tensile and bending characteristics are evaluated according to test standards, comparing experimental findings with reference specimens to understand the advantages or limitations of different fiber arrangements.

Longitudinal compression failure of 3D printed continuous carbon fiber reinforced composites: An experimental and computational study

Haibin Tang et al.

Summary: The study systematically investigates the longitudinal compression failure mechanisms of 3D printed continuous carbon fiber reinforced polymer components using the Fused Filament Fabrication (FFF) technique. Experimental and computational analyses show that the introduction of waved filaments can lead to degradation of the failure strength, although further degradation is limited when more waved filaments are used. Fracture morphology analysis reveals the occurrence of in-plane and out-of-plane kink-bands, with failure predominantly at the cross-section with the contact region of the waved and regular filaments.

Drivers of mechanical performance variance in 3D-printed fused filament fabrication parts: An Onyx FR case study

Christine Ma et al.

Summary: The study found that moisture and print orientation were the main factors affecting the mechanical properties in a 3D printing system. User-controlled factors had a significant impact on tensile strength, while user-uncontrolled factors had a minor effect. Reinforcing the part with continuous fiber significantly reduced moisture-induced variance and increased measured strength.

A finite element approach for the prediction of the mechanical behaviour of layered composites produced by Continuous Filament Fabrication (CFF)

Manuela Galati et al.

Summary: Continuous Filament Fabrication (CFF) is an additive manufacturing process that produces components with long fiber reinforced materials without the need for tools or molds. A preliminary study using 3D Finite Element (FE) method was conducted to predict the mechanical behavior of composites fabricated by CFF. The study developed a FE model to determine material properties and validated the model through experimental and numerical comparisons.
