A Conceptual Approach to Partitioning a Vertical Profile of Phytoplankton Biomass Into Contributions From Two Communities

Robert J. W. Brewin et al.

Summary: This study describes an approach to decompose the vertical profile of chlorophyll-a concentration into contributions from two phytoplankton communities. One community (community 1) can be observed through satellite visible radiometry and resides in the turbulent mixed-layer of the upper ocean, while the other community (community 2) resides below the mixed-layer and is hidden from satellite observations. The approach is tuned using data from a Biogeochemical-Argo float in the Red Sea, and it is extended to reproduce profiles of particle backscattering. The analysis of the float data reveals contrasting phenology and correlations with epipelagic stratification and light for the two communities. This approach has the potential to monitor changes in epipelagic biogeography and provide a three-dimensional view of phytoplankton distribution by combining satellite and ocean robotic data.

Restoration of Wintertime Ocean Color Remote Sensing Products for the High-Latitude Oceans of the Southern Hemisphere

Hao Li et al.

Summary: This study proposes a neural network atmospheric correction algorithm to recover satellite ocean color products for the high-latitude oceans of the Southern Hemisphere during winter. The algorithm outperforms traditional methods and provides more effective records of higher accuracy. The recovered products can be used to investigate the marine ecological environment of the Antarctic and sub-Antarctic oceans during winter.

Estimation of Particulate Backscattering Coefficient in Turbid Inland Water Using Sentinel 3A-OLCI Image

Jiafeng Xu et al.

Summary: A simple classification method was proposed to distinguish two water types with different backscattering characteristics in turbid inland water. Trigonometric functions were developed to simulate the backscattering coefficients at all bands in one water type and in the visible band of the other type, showing satisfactory performance in inland waters.
