Direct methanol fuel cells system-A review of dual-role electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction and methanol oxidation

Yuanhui Zuo et al.

Summary: One fundamental challenge in exploiting DMFCs is the preparation of inexpensive, high active electrocatalysts. There are mainly two types of dual-role electrocatalysts for MOR & ORR: Pt-support/co-catalyst (P-S/C) and catalyst/co-catalyst (C/C).

3D nickel diselenide architecture on nitrogen-doped carbon as a highly efficient electrode for the electrooxidation of methanol and urea

Yue Shi et al.

Summary: This study synthesized nickel selenide and 3D nickel diselenide architectures on N-doped carbon successfully, showing good catalytic activity for methanol oxidation and urea oxidation reactions. The enhanced performance of NiSe2/NC-450 is attributed to the expanded electrochemically active area after selenization and the enhanced conductivity after N-doped carbon.

One-stone, two birds: Alloying effect and surface defects induced by Pt on Cu2-xSe nanowires to boost C-C bond cleavage for electrocatalytic ethanol oxidation

Hongcheng Peng et al.

Summary: Efficient C-C bond cleavage is crucial for ethanol electrooxidation. PtCu/Cu2-xSe nanowires exhibited high activity for ethanol and methanol oxidation due to the formation of PtCu alloys lowering the D-band level to promote hydroxyl species adsorption, and creating abundant defects with high density of low-coordinated atoms to boost reaction kinetics. The assembled direct ethanol fuel cells with PtCu/Cu2-xSe NWs as anode showed promising performance, providing a potential catalyst for C-C bond cleavage and an effective strategy to enhance electrocatalytic activity for ethanol/methanol oxidation.
