Every decade counts: a narrative review of functional recovery after partial nephrectomy

Summary: This narrative review provides an overview of the major advances and controversies regarding ischaemia and functional recovery after partial nephrectomy (PN). The duration of ischaemia has been found to strongly correlate with the development of acute kidney injury (AKI) and chronic kidney disease after clamped PN. Further research has shown that the volume of parenchymal tissue saved is the main determinant of functional outcomes. Cold ischaemia has been confirmed to be highly protective, and limited warm ischaemia is also safe. The reconstructive phase of PN appears to be most important for functional recovery.
