Sensitivity study of thermal-hydraulic nodalization for MELCOR simulations of severe accidents in a pressurized water reactor

Nan Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the sensitivity of the thermal-hydraulic nodalization in the core region for severe accident simulations using the MELCOR code. The refined CVH nodal schemes show significant impacts on the simulation results of in-vessel accident progression, including core degradation, hydrogen generation, and fission products release.

Metallic melt jet fragmentation in a water pool: Experiments and numerical simulations

Sachin Thakre et al.

Summary: This study investigates experimental and numerical simulation of metallic melt jet fragmentation, showing the influence of Weber number on the fragmentation patterns. The experiments reveal that the jet fragmentation follows R-T instability at lower Weber numbers and K-H instability at higher Weber numbers. Measurement challenges at larger scales lead to the use of different methods for estimating jet breakup lengths. Numerical simulations considering hydrodynamic effects only underestimate the jet breakup lengths as they do not consider the presence of a vapor film.

A scoping study on debris bed formation from metallic melt coolant interactions

Yan Xiang et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the formation and characteristics of debris during a severe accident in a light water reactor, analyzing the debris bed formed by a metal-rich corium jet falling into a water pool. Experimental results show the influence of parameters like superheat and subcooling on the characteristics of the debris bed, including configuration, porosity, particle morphology, and size distribution. Preliminary comparison between metallic and oxidic debris beds was also provided.

A nodal sensitivity study of MELCOR simulation for severe accidents in a pressurized water reactor

Nan Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the sensitivity of nodal schemes in MELCOR simulation of severe accidents in a pressurized water reactor, showing that nodal schemes primarily affect heat transfer calculations and have relatively less impact on the estimation of in-containment source term. The results suggest that coarse mesh tends to predict slower core relocation progressions and later failure of RPV lower head, while fine mesh simulations provide more detailed distributions of corium masses and temperatures, affecting the thermal and mechanical behavior of RPV lower head.
