Experimental study on the influence of an alternating magnetic field on the CaCO3 fouling of a heat transfer surface

Yandong Liang et al.

Summary: Experiments show that the alternating magnetic field can effectively inhibit the formation of calcium carbonate fouling on heat transfer surfaces by extending the fouling induction period and slowing down the growth rate of fouling. The fouling inhibition effect depends on the selection of operating parameters in the alternating magnetic field, with the most significant period being 300 Gs.

Predicting tubular heat exchanger efficiency reduction caused by marine biofilm adhesion using CFD simulations

David Boullosa-Falces et al.

Summary: A novel efficiency reduction model for tubular heat exchangers based on heat transfer losses caused by biofilm adhesion is proposed, which utilizes computational fluid dynamics (CFD) to simulate the growth of the biofilm. The model is validated by experimental data and shows a good fit with a correlation coefficient (R2) ranging from 0.97 to 0.99. The simulation results demonstrate that the model is capable of predicting the efficiency losses during the development period of biofilm growth in open-loop cooling seawater systems.

Experimental study on fouling inhibition characteristics of a variable frequency electromagnetic field on the CaCO3 fouling of a heat transfer surface

Yandong Liang et al.

Summary: Forced convective heat transfer and CaCO3 deposition experiments were conducted to investigate the fouling inhibition characteristics of a variable frequency electromagnetic field. The results showed that the electromagnetic field effectively inhibited the CaCO3 fouling deposition and decreased the growth rate of fouling. It also reduced the conductivity of the test fluid and promoted the crystallization of CaCO3 in aragonite, resulting in easily removable soft fouling. An evaluation model was proposed to better define the fouling inhibition effect of the variable frequency electromagnetic field.

The role of Mg2+ in inhibiting CaCO3 precipitation from seawater

Yiwen Pan et al.

Summary: The presence of Mg2+ in seawater inhibits CaCO3 precipitation, particularly at the nucleation stage, leading to aragonite nucleation at a seawater Mg:Ca ratio of 5.2. Only calcite and aragonite seeds exhibit significant catalysis of CaCO3 precipitation, indicating that not all particles in natural seawater can catalyze this process.

Summary: The study found that PBTCA exhibited a more effective inhibitory effect against calcium carbonate scaling compared to HEDP, with PBTCA more evidently inhibiting the growth of the (104) crystal plane of calcite. Molecular dynamics simulation also confirmed the stronger interaction of PBTCA with the (104) crystal surface of calcite than that of HEDP.
