Nonstandard continualization of 1D lattice with next-nearest interactions. Low order ODEs and enhanced prediction of the dispersive behavior

F. Gomez-Silva et al.

Summary: In this article, different standard and nonstandard continualization techniques are applied to a one-dimensional solid consisting of a chain of masses interacting with nearest and next-nearest neighbors through linear springs. The study focuses on the reliability of different continua in capturing the dispersive behavior of the discrete system, as well as their effect on the need for nonclassical boundary conditions and physical inconsistencies at short wavelengths. The Regularization method, used for a lattice with nearest interactions, presents advantages over the others.

Dynamic analysis and non-standard continualization of a Timoshenko beam lattice

F. Gomez-Silva et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a novel Timoshenko beam lattice model and obtains multiple low-order non-classical continuum models through different continualization methods to capture size effects and dispersive behavior. In addition, an in-depth analysis of the transition frequency highlights its significance in discrete and non-standard continuum models.

Selection of size dependency theory effects on the wave's dispersions of magneto-electro-thermo-elastic nano-beam resting on visco-elastic foundation

S. Faroughi et al.

Summary: This study presents a comprehensive analysis of wave propagation in magneto-electro-thermo-elastic nano-beams resting on visco-elastic media. The wave propagation behavior of nano-beams is analyzed using modified couple stress (MCS) and Eringen's nonlocal (ENL) theories, which include size-dependent length scale parameters. The study compares the two theories and explores their impacts and differences on wave propagation. The results reveal that the wave frequency decreases with the increase of the nonlocal parameter in the ENL model, while a stiffening effect occurs when considering the MCS model. The study concludes that there is a significant difference between the ENL and MCS theories in estimating the behavior of wave propagation in small-scale structures.

Dispersive waves in magneto-electro-elastic periodic waveguides

Rosaria Del Toro et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the influence of heterogeneous multi-phase cells on the propagation of multifield Bloch waves in magneto-electro-elastic (MEE) materials. The dispersion properties are analyzed through analytical determination and perturbation methods. It is found that slow-propagating quasi-shear-elastic waves dominate the low-frequency range, while fast-propagating quasi-magneto-electric waves dominate the high-frequency range. The propagation and attenuation behaviors of these waves can be controlled by varying the physical parameters.

Summary: A novel class of multifield nested tunable metadevices is proposed as high performance acoustic metafilters. The designed metafilter has a multiscale, hierarchical structure, and the optimal filtering performance is achieved by adjusting the tuning parameter, paving the way for the design of sophisticated and topologically optimized acoustic filters.

Nagham Mawassy et al.

Summary: The effective piezoelectric properties of heterogeneous materials were evaluated using periodic homogenization, with a variational formulation developed. It was found that the entire set of homogenized piezoelectric moduli can be obtained by weighting the microscopic properties of individual constituents with displacement and polarization localization operators.

Dynamics of prestressed elastic lattices: Homogenization, instabilities, and strain localization

G. Bordiga et al.

Summary: The study investigates the dynamic behavior of an elastic lattice under different levels of axial load, utilizing a Floquet-Bloch wave asymptotics to homogenize the mechanical response and obtain an equivalent elastic solid. The loss of strong ellipticity in the equivalent continuum coincides with macro-bifurcation in the lattice, while micro-bifurcation remains undetected in the continuum. Additionally, the research reveals the presence of low-frequency wave localizations and the difference in instability manifestations between macro and micro levels in the lattice and its equivalent solid.

Identification of non-local continua for lattice-like materials

Andrea Bacigalupo et al.

Summary: This paper focuses on dynamic homogenization of lattice-like materials with lumped mass at nodes to obtain energetically consistent models for accurate descriptions of the discrete system's acoustic behavior. By utilizing proper mapping and enhanced continualization, equivalent continuum models with non-local terms are derived, achieving energy-consistent differential equations for effective representation of the system's behavior.

Variational-asymptotic homogenization of thermoelastic periodic materials with thermal relaxation

Deison Preve et al.

Summary: A multi-scale variational-asymptotic homogenization method is developed for periodic microstructured materials in presence of thermoelasticity with periodic spatially dependent one relaxation time. The method establishes equivalence between macro-scale and micro-scale equations, leading to efficient computation of the microscopic fields in terms of the macroscopic ones. Results show good agreement with heterogeneous continuum theory.
