Phase-field regularised cohesive zone model for interface modelling

L. Chen et al.

Summary: This article introduces the modeling of discrete interfaces in the phase field regularization framework and compares the applicability of different phase field models. The method combines the advantages of discrete and smeared approaches to improve the accuracy of interface modeling. The effectiveness of the method is demonstrated through several numerical examples.

Extended Powell-Sabin finite element scheme for linear elastic fracture mechanics

L. Chen et al.

Summary: Powell-Sabin B-splines, based on triangles, are used in the extended finite element method (XFEM) for fracture analysis. They avoid the need for remeshing and improve the accuracy around the crack tip. The approach captures stress around the crack tip more accurately and maintains C1 continuity throughout the entire domain.

Hydraulic fracturing analysis in fluid-saturated porous medium

Lin Chen et al.

Summary: This paper investigates fluid-driven crack propagation in a porous medium. Cohesive interface elements are used to simulate crack behavior, with a separate fluid pressure degree of freedom inside the crack to model hydraulic fracturing. Powell-Sabin B-splines, based on triangles, are utilized to describe the geometry of the domain and interpolate the field variables. The continuity property of these splines enables a smooth evaluation of stress and pressure gradient, ensuring accurate fracture criterion assessment at the crack tip.

Phase-field modelling of cohesive fracture

Lin Chen et al.

Summary: In phase-field models, damage evolution is treated as a minimisation problem of a Griffith-like energy functional. By selecting appropriate characteristic functions, cohesive fracture can be reproduced in a one-dimensional setting. The method can partially replicate the response of a cohesive zone model, such as the traction-separation law, but not all aspects like dissipated energy. The crack nucleation load for a one-dimensional problem smoothly transitions from a strength criterion to a toughness criterion as the bar length varies, with results showing good agreement in two-dimensional settings.

X-IGALME: Isogeometric analysis extended with local maximum entropy for fracture analysis

Farshid Fathi et al.

Summary: The extended approach blends isogeometric analysis and the first-order local maximum entropy for accurate parametrization and improved estimation, enforcing compatibility and eliminating discontinuity effects through techniques such as shifting and blending. Several examples demonstrate the viability, including straight and curved crack propagation.
