Strategies for damage tolerance enhancement in metal/ceramic thin films: Lessons learned from Ti/TiN

Ashwini Kumar Mishra et al.

Summary: This study explores the use of multilayering to enhance the damage tolerance of brittle ceramics like Titanium Nitride (TiN) in nanostructured, thin film form. By modifying the crack driving force through elastic-plastic mismatch, the fracture toughness of Ti/TiN multilayers is increased compared to single layer TiN, while maintaining comparable hardness. The results provide design parameters for multilayering in metal/ceramic thin film systems.

Debonding characterization of stiff film/compliant substrate systems based on the bilinear cohesive zone model

Hao Long et al.

Summary: This study proposes a theoretical model based on the bilinear cohesive zone model to characterize the debonding process of stiff film/compliant substrate systems. The solutions of this model are validated by experimental data and finite element analysis, showing that it can accurately capture the debonding process and discuss the influencing factors.

Fracture toughness trends of modulus-matched TiN/(Cr,Al)N thin film superlattices

J. Buchinger et al.

Summary: The use of superlattice architectures can enhance the hardness and fracture toughness of ceramic thin films. The mechanisms behind the toughness-enhancing effect are still partially unexplored, but by designing superlattices with identical elastic moduli but different lattice parameters, an enhanced fracture toughness was observed. The understanding of the coherency strains in the nanolayers within the superlattice structure is crucial for the observed toughness enhancement.

Crack propagation of a thin hard coating under cyclic loading: Irreversible cohesive zone model

J. Feng et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the fatigue failure mechanism of coated substrates by observing crack initiation and propagation. Results showed that cracks initiated at the edge of the contact area and rapidly propagated through the coating layer. The irreversible cohesive zone model was effective in predicting the coating system's loading bearing capacity under contact fatigue loading conditions.

Extraction of microstructural parameters from sculptured thin films nanoindentation

Y. Gaillard et al.

Summary: This work focused on the indentation analysis of nanocolumnar thin films and revealed the importance of microstructure in determining mechanical properties. The study found that a unique analytical thin-film nanoindentation model did not exist and developed a numerical finite element model to understand the contributions of different physical phenomena. By incorporating two length scales and considering densification and buckling of nanocolumnar units, a parametrical representation was developed to accurately predict the elastic modulus variation with depth during indentation tests, leading to a better agreement with experimentally determined values.

An inverse problem in estimating fracture toughness of TiAlN thin films by finite element method based on nanoindentation morphology

Z. T. Jiang et al.

Summary: The fracture toughness of TiAlN thin films on AISI 304 austenitic stainless steel was inversely investigated using nanoindentation experiment and simulation methods. By controlling the displacement of the nanoindenter and observing the crack number and position, the fracture toughness of TiAlN thin films was calculated to be 1.09 MPa m1/2.
