Experimental Investigation of the Relationships Among P-Wave Velocity, Tensile Strength, and Mode-I Fracture Toughness of Granite After High-Temperature Treatment

Yuefei Hu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of temperature on the properties of heated granite and analyzed the relationships between temperature and physical/mechanical parameters. The results showed that the mass, P-wave velocity, and tensile strength of granite decreased with increasing heat-treatment temperature. The fracture toughness of granite increased slightly up to 100 degrees C and then decreased gradually. The ratio of tensile strength to fracture toughness increased with temperature, indicating increased brittleness of the rock.

Effect of Different Cooling Treatments on the Tensile Properties and Fracture Modes of Granite Heated at Different Temperatures

Chunbo Zhou et al.

Summary: In this study, Brazilian tests and 3D fracture surface measurements were conducted on granite at different temperatures and cooling treatments. The results revealed that the tensile properties of granite varied in different temperature zones and the liquid nitrogen cooling treatment had a smaller impact on the deterioration of tensile properties compared to water cooling. Additionally, the liquid nitrogen cooling treatment at higher temperatures resulted in an increase in fracture surface roughness due to the presence of shear cracks or mixed crack propagation.

Thermal cycling effects on the dynamic behavior of granite and microstructural observations

Jingwei Gao et al.

Summary: The study found that the dynamic properties of granite, such as P-wave velocity, P-wave modulus, and dynamic compressive strength, decrease exponentially with an increase in the number of thermal cycles. This decrease mainly occurs during the first thermal cycle, with the P-wave modulus and dynamic strength decreasing significantly. Impact failure generates smaller fragments and more fine powder, with these observations becoming more pronounced as the number of thermal cycles increases. The tests reveal a close relationship between the dynamic properties of thermally damaged granite and microcracks induced by thermal cycling.

Experimental Investigation of the Dynamic Tensile Properties of Naturally Saturated Rocks Using the Coupled Static-Dynamic Flattened Brazilian Disc Method

Xinying Liu et al.

Summary: Research indicates that the dynamic tensile strength of naturally saturated specimens increases with loading rate, but decreases with pre-tension. Additionally, the dynamic strength of naturally saturated sandstone is lower than that of natural sandstone, with similar fracture behavior. Water effects on mechanical properties, water wedging effect, and Stefan effect explain the dynamic tensile behavior of rocks with static preload.
