Unraveling the interactions of reductants and reaction path over Cu-ZSM-5 for model coal-gas-SCR via a transient reaction study

Jie Cheng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the interactions and synergistic effects between components of coal gas in SCR reactions and clarified the interactions between reductants over Cu-ZSM-5 with the help of TPD, TPSR, and transient reaction studies. The findings revealed that H-2 can enhance CO-SCR performance by promoting the NCO route, while CO can restrain H-2-SCR by covering active sites with bicarbonate species. Additionally, NCO can efficiently activate CH4, improving CH4-SCR performance following the CH3NO route at low temperatures.

Effects of high-power microwave irradiation on tar-rich coal for realising in situ pyrolysis, fragmentation, and low-carbon utilisation of tar-rich coal

Yang Ju et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of high-power microwave irradiation on the strength and microstructural changes of tar-rich coal. The results show a linear positive correlation between the overflow rate of coal gas and tar and microwave energy, while the uniaxial compressive strength and brittleness of tar-rich coal have a piecewise linear negative correlation with microwave energy. High-power microwave has a more significant effect on strength weakening, fracturing, and fragmentation of tar-rich coal. These findings provide insights for the in-situ conversion, high-efficiency utilization, and low carbon emissions of tar-rich coal using the technology of intelligent unmanned mining machine (IUMM).

Summary: The study found that the uniaxial compressive strength, elasticity modulus, and peak strain of rock are significantly dependent on strain rate. Different strain rates result in varying failure modes and acoustic emission characteristics in rock, while the microscopic fracture morphology plays a crucial role in rock mechanical behaviors.

Subsurface Microbial Invasion Affects the Microbial Community of Coal Seams

Yang Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of subsurface microbial invasion on coal microorganisms by infecting coal samples with soil microorganisms from different depths. The results show that the abundance and transcriptional activity of coal bacteria were significantly improved by certain soil extractions, while methane production and archaeal genes remained unchanged. Differences in the effects on bacterial diversity between coal samples treated by different soil extractions were also observed.

Microwave pyrolysis and its applications to the in situ recovery and conversion of oil from tar-rich coal: An overview on fundamentals, methods, and challenges

Yang Ju et al.

Summary: Efficient, safe, and environmentally friendly methods for low-carbon utilization of coal are crucial for cleaner energy production. While tar-rich coal in western China holds great potential, current practices result in wastage of valuable oil resources and serious environmental pollution. Research is focusing on achieving zero or near-zero carbon emissions while minimizing damage to geological formations when mining coal, with novel approaches such as intelligent unmanned automatic mining machines (UAMM) integrating microwave pyrolysis technology for in situ extraction of oil and gas being proposed.

Microwave selective heating of electric arc furnace dust constituents toward sustainable recycling: Contribution of electric and magnetic fields

Sanad Altarawneh et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relative contribution of different components in waste electric arc furnace dust (EAFD) to heating using separated electric and magnetic microwave fields. It was found that ZnO, ZnFe2O4, Fe3O4, and graphite were the main contributors to EAFD heating, with different heating mechanisms in electric and magnetic fields. The selective magnetic heating of Fe3O4 was identified as having significant implications for the selective extraction of zinc and lead through thermal treatment with halogenated plastics such as PVC.
