On the thermal conductivity anisotropy of thinly interbedded rock

Zheng-Wei Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the thermal conductivity anisotropy of thinly interbedded rock through experimental and numerical approaches. Optical scanning technique is used to obtain the distributed thermal conductivity on the sample surface, and the effects of spatial location and geometric size on the thermal conductivity anisotropy are studied. The results show significant heterogeneous characteristics in the local anisotropy factors, which are influenced by variations in mineral bands thickness, visible fissures, and their orientation relation with bedding planes. A finite element model is established to simulate the thermal conduction process and anisotropic characteristics of the rock, and sensitivity analysis is performed on the model parameters. The findings contribute to a better understanding of the anisotropic thermal properties of interbedded rock masses.

Heat Flow in Fractured Rocks: Stress and Moisture-Dependent Thermal Contact Resistance

A. Garcia et al.

Summary: The thermal conductivity of fractured rock masses is an important parameter for energy geosystems analysis, with measurement challenged by specimen size requirements. Fluids within fractures have lower thermal conductivities, causing heat flow constriction and phonon boundary scattering. Thermal contact resistance in fractured limestone decreases during loading, with water filling fractures improving heat conduction.

Study on Representative Volume Elements Considering Inhomogeneity and Anisotropy of Rock Masses Characterised by Non-persistent Fractures

Wenliang Ma et al.

Summary: This study investigates the inhomogeneity and anisotropy of rock masses, which lead to spatial and directional effects in RVE size, necessitating improvements in traditional RVE determination methods. By considering the special characteristics, geometric and mechanical RVE sizes are determined with a coefficient of variation, and a relationship between them is established.

Effective Thermal Conductivity Estimation of Fractured Rock Masses

Zheng-Wei Li et al.

Summary: In this study, the effective thermal conductivity of fractured rock masses was numerically investigated, revealing a relationship between lambda(Eff) and fracture parameters that can be fitted with power law or negative exponent functions. It was also found that lambda(Eff) is linearly positively correlated with lambda(Intact), with the slope of the fitted line determined by fracture network parameters.
