A review of multi-scale modelling, assessment, and improvement methods of the urban thermal and wind environment

Sihong Du et al.

Summary: The urban thermal and wind environment (UTWE) is an important consideration in urban planning design, but there is a lack of method specifications and comprehensive study reviews, leading to unclear steps in assessment and improvement. The review found that scale is considered in modelling and improvement studies, but not in assessments. Contradictory conclusions were found in improvement studies, and current assessments do not directly guide the selection of improvement strategies.

Wearable sensing techniques to understand pedestrian-level outdoor microclimate affecting heat related risk in urban parks

Benedetta Pioppi et al.

Summary: As people around the world move to cities, the changes in land use and cover caused by rapid urbanization have led to hotter cities, exacerbated extreme weather events, and decreased quality of life. In this study conducted in New York City, a wearable sensing platform was tested to study microclimate boundary conditions at pedestrian level and the impact of urban greening on reducing excess heat in dense urban areas. The results showed high spatial variability in temperature, humidity, and solar radiation within urban parks, and small urban parks in New York City were able to reduce air temperature by 3-7 degrees Celsius on average.

Toward park design optimization to mitigate the urban heat Island: Assessment of the cooling effect in five US cities

Zhen Gao et al.

Summary: Urban parks can help cool the urban environment and alleviate the urban heat island effect. The cooling effect of parks varies among different cities, with the park's area and evapotranspiration being major factors influencing the cooling effect. The relationship between park cooling effects and these factors is nonlinear.

A Study of Simulation of the Urban Space 3D Temperature Field at a Community Scale Based on High-Resolution Remote Sensing and CFD

Hongyuan Huo et al.

Summary: This study used high-resolution remote-sensing technology and CFD models to simulate a three-dimensional (3D) USTE at a block scale. The results showed that vegetation has a significant mitigation effect on the surface thermal environment, and different vegetation layouts result in varying mitigation efficiency of wind speed and USTE. The study also analyzed the mitigation effect of vegetation on the urban wind-heat environment during daytime and nighttime, revealing more significant effects during the daytime and a more even temperature distribution at night.

How can urban parks be planned to maximize cooling effect in hot extremes? Linking maximum and accumulative perspectives

Chunlei Du et al.

Summary: This study quantified the cooling effect of 65 urban parks in Greater Xi'an using multiple satellite images. The results showed that the cooling distance and intensity of urban parks depend on their tree density and interaction with the surrounding environment. Large parks and parks with complex shapes can maximize the cooling effect, while small parks can serve as highly efficient cooling networks. Increasing vegetation growth and combining blue and green infrastructures are effective strategies to increase cooling intensity.

How to quantify the cooling effect of urban parks? Linking maximum and accumulation perspectives

Jian Peng et al.

Summary: This study proposed a comprehensive approach to measuring park cooling effects with both maximum and accumulation perspectives, which can guide urban park planning and design to maximize the ecological benefits. The results showed that different types of urban parks have different cooling capacities, with comprehensive parks exhibiting more efficient cooling effects. The study highlights the importance of considering spatial continuity and cumulative impact in exploring urban park cooling effects.
