Satellite Remote Sensing of Global Land Surface Temperature: Definition, Methods, Products, and Applications

Zhao-Liang Li et al.

Summary: Land surface temperature (LST) is a crucial parameter that reflects land-atmosphere interaction. This review summarizes the progress in LST estimation algorithms and provides an comprehensive collection of widely used LST products. It also addresses the problems related to current LST products and introduces effective methods to overcome these challenges. The development of spatiotemporal seamless LST data significantly promotes the application of LST products in various fields.

A global historical twice-daily (daytime and nighttime) land surfacetemperature dataset produced by Advanced Very High Resolution Radiometer observations from 1981 to 2021

Jia-Hao Li et al.

Summary: In this study, a global historical twice-daily land surface temperature (LST) dataset was developed using AVHRR GAC data from 1981 to 2021. It provides a longer time series of temperature variations compared to existing datasets. The dataset has a spatial resolution of 0.05 degrees and was generated through several processes including data preprocessing, cloud detection, land surface emissivity estimation, and LST retrieval. Validation with in situ measurements and intercomparison with other satellite datasets showed good accuracy. The proposed dataset offers more information and research applications compared to existing datasets.

Generation of Spatial-Seamless AMSR2 Land Surface Temperature in China During 20122020 Using a Deep Neural Network

Yihua Lian et al.

Summary: A new orbital gap-filling method based on a deep neural network (DNN) was developed to address the issue of PMW land surface temperature (LST) orbital gaps. Through validation analysis, it was found that DNN-LST has good robustness and spatial consistency with AMSR2 LST, and can be well used to fill the orbital gaps of AMSR2 LST.

Generating gapless land surface temperature with a high spatio-temporal resolution by fusing multi-source satellite-observed and model-simulated data

Jun Ma et al.

Summary: In this study, an integrated temperature fusion framework was proposed to map gapless land surface temperature (LST) with high spatio-temporal resolution. Preprocessing steps including sensor and temporal normalization were performed, and a filter-based spatiotemporal integrated fusion model was used for data fusion. The results demonstrate the capability of the proposed framework to support diurnal dynamic studies, such as urban heat island (UHI) analysis and water resource management, with high consistency and accuracy.

Seamless downscaling of the ESA CCI soil moisture data at the daily scale with MODIS land products

Wei Zhao et al.

Summary: Spatial downscaling is essential in regional applications of coarse-resolution passive microwave surface soil moisture (SSM) products. The proposed improved downscaling method utilizes MODIS Terra daily land surface temperature (LST) and normalized difference vegetation index (NDVI) products as auxiliary data, resulting in a seamless downscaled SSM series at 1km spatial resolution for the Iberian Peninsula. The downscaled SSM data exhibits strong temporal correlation with precipitation events and good performance compared to alternative SSM datasets, confirming the efficiency and convenience of the proposed method in generating high-resolution SSM data.
