Distance approximation to support customer selection in vehicle routing problems

Fabian Akkerman et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the solution value estimation of the traveling salesman problem and vehicle routing problem using regression models. The distance can be accurately estimated using simple regression models and a limited number of features. New spatial feature classes are introduced. The validation experiments demonstrate the performance advantages of the model in different cases and configurations.

Learning to select cuts for efficient mixed-integer programming

Zeren Huang et al.

Summary: Cutting plane methods play a significant role in modern solvers for tackling mixed-integer programming (MIP) problems. Proper selection of cuts can reduce computational burden without compromising solution accuracy. However, existing cut selection methods heavily rely on heuristics, limiting their generalization capability.

Assignment of duplicate storage locations in distribution centres to minimise walking distance in order picking

Wei Jiang et al.

Summary: With the rapid development of e-commerce, B2C warehouses are facing the challenge of processing heterogeneous and small volume orders. Traditional storage strategies are no longer advantageous, leading to the exploration of scattered storage strategies. A new scattered storage strategy considering product correlation, formulated as a 0-1 integer programming model, was proposed in this study. GA and basic PSO algorithms were developed for large-scale problem solving, with a specially designed new PSO algorithm and a hybrid algorithm showing improved solution quality.

Machine learning for combinatorial optimization: A methodological tour d'horizon

Yoshua Bengio et al.

Summary: This paper surveys recent attempts from the machine learning and operations research communities to leverage machine learning for solving combinatorial optimization problems, advocating for further integration and providing a methodology for doing so. The main point of the paper is to view generic optimization problems as data points to investigate the relevant distribution of problems for learning on a specific task.
