Automated identification of slip system activity fields from digital image correlation data

T. Vermeij et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a novel slip system identification framework called SSLIP, which matches the measured displacement gradient fields to the kinematics of theoretical slip systems based on crystal orientations. An optimization problem is solved for each data point to determine the amount of slip conforming to the measured kinematics, resulting in a slip activity field. The framework is demonstrated and validated on different metals, including challenging cases with complex slip mechanisms.

Summary: Understanding the mechanisms at the microstructure scale is crucial for modeling material behavior. This study explores the use of high resolution digital image correlation (HRDIC) combined with in situ Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) tests to establish a connection between polycrystalline modeling and experiment. The tensile behavior of a pure copper polycrystal is evaluated using HRDIC, and the impact of grain orientation on mechanical behavior is discussed through EBSD analysis.

Numerical prediction of {1122}(1123) compression twin activation in commercially pure titanium under uniaxial tension

Yoshiki Kawano et al.

Summary: In this study, the criteria for {1122} compression twinning in commercially pure titanium (CP-Ti) were investigated. It was found that the dominant active twin system was {1122} compression twin, primarily activated through prismatic slip. Considering plastic deformation allowed for accurate prediction of twinning positions. The study revealed that hydrostatic pressure and resolved shear stress (RSS) may be potential criteria for {1122} twinning.

Li -Ya Liu et al.

Summary: This study combined the crystal plasticity finite element method (CPFEM) and cohesive zone model (CZM) to investigate the cracking mechanism of polycrystalline aluminum with different grain gradient structures under tensile load. The results showed the crack initiation and propagation process of polycrystalline aluminum with different grain-gradient structures, as well as revealing the mechanism of intragrain fracture, GB fracture, and crack transgranular. Additionally, the study found that initial microcracks with different positions, numbers, and angles have a significant influence on the cracking mechanism and effective properties of the material.

Summary: Crystallographic aspects of heterogeneous plastic flow during ductile tearing are assessed experimentally by combining in situ synchrotron laminography imaging with numerical simulations using the crystal plasticity finite element method. The study reveals the early onset of slant strained bands which eventually lead to the formation of slant cracks. The simulation results show similar trends to the experimental observations, indicating the stability of the slant strained bands over the loading history.

Effects of Boundary Conditions on Microstructure-Sensitive Fatigue Crystal Plasticity Analysis

Krzysztof S. Stopka et al.

Summary: The relative fatigue resistance of different polycrystalline microstructures can be evaluated using fatigue indicator parameters (FIPs) that serve as surrogate measures for the fatigue crack formation driving force. Simulating many grains/phases to capture sufficient microstructure heterogeneity remains computationally prohibitive, so ensembles of statistical volume elements (SVEs) can be used to build up the extreme value fatigue response. The nature of applied boundary conditions is a crucial consideration in crystal plasticity finite element method (CPFEM) simulations, and fatigue crack formation has been observed to occur either at or near the free surface or throughout the specimen volume, depending on various factors.
