Rapid amorphization of CrMnFeCoNi high-entropy alloy under ultrasonic vibrations

Caitao Fan et al.

Summary: Due to their unique design concept, high-entropy alloys (HEAs) exhibit unusual properties and lead to an emerging new field. In this study, it is shown that a typical face-centered cubic crystalline phase CoCrFeNiMn HEA can be easily transformed into the amorphous phase through ultrasonic vibration treatment at a frequency of 20000 Hz. Nanoscale hierarchical features, including twins, stacking faults bands, hexagonal-close packed phase bands, and amorphous bands, can be clearly observed in samples treated with different ultrasonic vibration energies. The main mechanism of ultrasonic vibration-induced amorphization is the promotion of amorphous phase formation through grain refinement when the defect density at grain boundaries reaches a critical level. Furthermore, mechanical instability is easily induced by ultrasonic vibration at high strain rate to generate amorphous phase inside grains. As a result of ultrasonic vibration treatment, the HEA samples exhibit significant improvement in mechanical performance, mainly attributed to microstructure evolution, especially the generation of the amorphous phase, such as yielding strength and hardness. This rapid amorphization process not only provides a potential strengthening mechanism for HEAs but also offers a novel approach to investigate the crystal-amorphous transition problem.

Shear localization in polycrystalline metal at high-strain rates with dynREamic recrystallization: Crystal plasticity modeling and texture effect

Wen An et al.

Summary: Shear localization in metals at high-strain rates is a significant failure mode, and predicting its occurrence and evolution accurately is a great challenge. A new dislocation-based crystal plasticity constitutive model with dynamic recrystallization as a crucial mechanism of shear instability was developed. The model was validated through numerical prediction and experimental data, showing that dynamic recrystallization can be a dominant mechanism for shear instability. The study also investigated the effects of loading mode and texture on shear localization in Cu-Al alloys. This work is important for understanding microstructural evolution in shear localization formation and designing microstructures to control or prevent shear localization.

Adiabatic shear localization induced by dynamic recrystallization in an FCC high entropy alloy

Kun Jiang et al.

Summary: In this study, the dynamic mechanical behavior of a face-centered cubic (FCC) high/medium entropy alloy (HEA) was investigated through split Hopkinson pressure bar (SHPB) experiments. Electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to examine the microstructure of the specimens. The results showed that the alloy exhibited strong strain hardening capacity, strain rate sensitivity, and temperature dependence. The compressive failure at 77 K was caused by crack propagation within adiabatic shear bands (ASBs), which were formed due to dynamic recrystallization (DRX) of the material. The severe local shear flow, adiabatic temperature rise, and fast quenching within the ASBs resulted in ultrafine grains.

Effect of temperature and strain rate on quasi-static and dynamic compressive behavior of forged CrMnFeCoNi high entropy alloy

Jie Sun et al.

Summary: The mechanical properties of CrMnFeCoNi HEA can be improved by forging, with increased compressive strength and plasticity. After forging, CrMnFeCoNi still maintains its face-centered cubic structure, with reduced grain size, more uniform elemental distribution, and the introduction of some defects. Compression tests at different temperatures and strain rates show that the material exhibits excellent compressive strength and great plasticity, with high sensitivity to temperature and strain rate. Different types of dynamic recrystallization, including DDRX, CDRX, and TDRX, are activated during hot compressions, with the formation of deformed twins favored at low temperature and high strain rate.

Quantitative investigation on deformation mechanism and dynamic recrystallization during localized adiabatic shearing of single crystal copper

Jianlin He et al.

Summary: In this study, the adiabatic shearing of single crystals was achieved by using large-sized columnar crystalline pure copper specimens prepared by directional solidification and a hat-shaped sample design. The flow stress was found to increase with increasing strain rate, and the dominant deformation mechanism at high strain rates was slipping rather than twinning. The microstructure of the sheared zone showed the transformation from large-sized dislocation cells to elongated dislocation cells and the occurrence of equiaxed recrystallized grains. This instantaneous grain refinement was attributed to the dynamic recrystallization of pure copper under adiabatic shearing conditions.

Shear deformation of pure-Cu and Cu/Nb nano-laminates using micromechanical testing

Tanvi Ajantiwalay et al.

Summary: Solid phase processing with shear deformation can lead to unique microstructure evolution and improved mechanical properties in immiscible systems like Cu/Nb. To understand the correlation between microstructure and deformation behavior, localized simple-shear loading is applied using a specialized S-shaped specimen geometry in pure-Cu and Cu/Nb accumulative roll-bonded nanolaminates. The nanoscale microstructure and proximity of interfaces in Cu/Nb result in a 2.8-fold increase in shear stress compared to pure-Cu. The adapted geometry successfully captures shear deformation at predicted sites in both material systems and could be a powerful technique for studying deformation mechanisms.

Forced shear deformation behaviors of annealed pure titanium under quasi-static and dynamic loading

Zhicheng Zhu et al.

Summary: The mechanical behavior and microstructure characteristics of pure titanium with hat-shaped specimens under quasi-static and dynamic loading were investigated and compared. The study found that dynamic specimens exhibited higher yield stress and peak stress compared to quasi-static specimens. Microstructure characterization revealed different localized deformation mechanisms in the two types of specimens, with quasi-static specimens showing a wide shear localization region mainly composed of elongated twin structures, while dynamic specimens exhibited an ASB region consisting of ultrafine equiaxed grains resulting from rotational dynamic recrystallization. The study also observed different types of primary twins and multiple generations of twins in both types of specimens. The microhardness of the shear localization region in quasi-static specimens and the ASB region in dynamic specimens were found to be higher due to strain hardening and ultrafine-grained strengthening, respectively. Microtexture analysis revealed different orientation relationships between grains and local shear planes in the two types of specimens.

Summary: The study reveals that under dynamic shear loading, a straight ASB is formed in pure magnesium specimens, consisting of transition and central regions with equiaxed grains containing large angle grain boundaries. Grain and strain increase from ASB central to matrix regions, resulting in strain concentration in the matrix region. The mechanically-driven subgrain rotation model explains the texture in ASB, showing dynamic recrystallized grains slip and rotate under normal stress, leading to a mixed fracture mode of brittle and ductile fracture along the ASB.
