Effects of Heavy Metal Stress on Physiology, Hydraulics, and Anatomy of Three Desert Plants in the Jinchang Mining Area, China

Tianpeng Gao et al.

Summary: The study investigated the physiological mechanisms and phytoremediation effects of three native quinoa species in a desert mining area. Results showed that the quinoa species demonstrated good adaptability and accumulation capacity under heavy metal stress, making them suitable candidates for tailings remediation in the region. The plants exhibited changes in heavy metal content, hydraulic parameters, and various physiological indicators under stress conditions.

Can the contamination of urban street sediment be used as an indicator for traffic density? A case-study in the city of Leuven, Belgium

Gunnar Berghman et al.

Summary: The study measured the concentrations of 13 chemical elements in urban street sediment in Leuven, Belgium, with Cu, Sb, Pb, and Zn showing the highest enrichment. Cu and Zn concentrations in Leuven exceeded those in most other cities. The Integrated Pollution Index for Leuven classified the city as very highly polluted on average.

Effect of Lead and Copper on Photosynthetic Apparatus in Citrus (Citrus aurantium L.) Plants. The Role of Antioxidants in Oxidative Damage as a Response to Heavy Metal Stress

Anastasia Giannakoula et al.

Summary: The study found that citrus leaves exposed to lead and copper contamination showed impacts on growth, chlorophyll content, and other factors, demonstrating symptoms of oxidative stress. The treated plants exhibited increased lipid peroxidation, elevated antioxidants, and significantly decreased photosynthetic activity.

In situ cultivation of aromatic plant species for the phytomanagement of an aged-trace element polluted soil: Plant biomass improvement options and techno-economic assessment of the essential oil production channel

Robin Raveau et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the use of clary sage and coriander for phytomanagement of aged TE-polluted soils, focusing on plant growth, biomass production, essential oil content and quality, and economic feasibility. In situ experiments showed that both plants could grow well on polluted and unpolluted soils, with the essential oils containing only trace amounts of contaminants similar to marketed products. Mycorrhizal inoculation increased colonization rates but did not significantly affect biomass or essential oil production.
