Development and Use of a Residence Time Distribution (RTD) Model Control Strategy for a Continuous Manufacturing Drug Product Pharmaceutical Process

Samantha Hurley et al.

Summary: RTD-based models are used to understand mixing dynamics in continuous manufacturing systems and allow for material traceability and removal of non-conforming material. This paper discusses the development of an RTD model design space and its statistical incorporation into the control strategy of a pharmaceutical manufacturing process. Experimental optimization of RTD parameters and their combination with real-time process data allows for prediction of downstream API concentration and validation across the operating range.
