A comparative study on micelles, liposomes and solid lipid nanoparticles for paclitaxel delivery

Shradha Dattani et al.

Summary: The purpose of this study was to compare LDV-targeted lipid-based micelles, liposomes, and solid lipid nanoparticles (SLN) in vitro and in vivo to investigate their therapeutic potential. The nanocarriers were characterized for their physicochemical properties, drug loading efficiency, release behavior, stability, and antitumor efficacy in a melanoma xenograft model. Results showed that SLN had the slowest drug release rate and highest stability, and demonstrated a statistically significant delay in tumor growth compared to the other two formulations. This study highlights the potential of SLN as drug delivery vehicles for anticancer therapy.

Hyaluronic acid-conjugated liposomes loaded with dexamethasone: A promising approach for the treatment of inflammatory diseases

Kamila Bohne Japiassu et al.

Summary: In this study, lipid nanoparticulate platforms loaded with dexamethasone were developed and evaluated. The dexamethasone-loaded liposomes, with sizes below 150 nm, were coated with polyethylene glycol, hyaluronic acid, or a mixture of both to cross the pulmonary mucus layer and target alveolar proinflammatory macrophages expressing CD44. In vitro experiments showed that encapsulated dexamethasone in liposomes, especially in HA-bearing ones, improved anti-inflammatory efficacy compared to the free drug. In vivo data demonstrated that dexamethasone-loaded liposomes exhibited improved consistency in efficacy compared to free dexamethasone.

Cellular Response to Bone Morphogenetic Proteins-2 and -7 Covalently Bound to Photocrosslinked Heparin-Diazoresin Multilayer

Magdalena Wytrwal et al.

Summary: This study investigated the covalent binding of recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 and -7 in stem cells and its effects on cell adhesion, migration, and osteogenesis. The presence of both proteins enhanced cell adhesion but limited cell motility, while the presence of single proteins promoted cell migration activity. Additionally, the coexistence of the proteins significantly increased early osteogenic marker expression.

Application of chitosan with different molecular weights in cartilage tissue engineering

Runjie Zhang et al.

Summary: Cartilage tissue engineering aims to develop novel implantable materials for cartilage replacement to overcome the limitations of current treatments. Chitosan, with its similar structure to glycine aminoglycan, has been widely used in this field. The molecular weight of chitosan is an important parameter that affects both the preparation method of chitosan composite scaffolds and the healing effect on cartilage tissue. This review summarizes the application of different molecular weights of chitosan in cartilage repair, providing methods for preparing chitosan composite scaffolds with low, medium, and high molecular weights as well as an appropriate range for cartilage tissue repair.

Molecular insights into the self-assembly of hydrophobically modified chondroitin sulfate in aqueous media

Agata Zak et al.

Summary: The behavior of hydrophobically modified chondroitin sulfate (CS) in aqueous media and the drug accumulation inside the formed micelle-like structures were studied. The results show that with increasing degree of substitution (DS), the morphology of the structures changes from irregular nanogels to cylindrical micelles with a core-shell architecture.

Hyaluronan alkyl derivatives-based electrospun membranes for potential guided bone regeneration: Fabrication, characterization and in vitro osteoinductive properties

Salvatore Federico et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the effects of chemical derivatization of hyaluronic acid on osteoinductive potential for guided bone regeneration. The results showed that the electrospun membranes with alkyl pendant grafts and crosslinking process demonstrated tunable resistance and enhanced drug release properties, as well as good cytocompatibility and cell proliferation. Osteogenic differentiation and mineralization were observed after 35 days, indicating the potential for application in bone regeneration.

Exploration and insights into the cellular internalization and intracellular fate of amphiphilic polymeric nanocarriers

Samrat Mazumdar et al.

Summary: The beneficial or deleterious effects of nanomedicines are influenced by their complex interactions with intracellular pathways and their subcellular fate. Manipulating the physicochemical attributes of nanocarriers can direct nanoparticles towards specific sub-cellular organelles, affecting cellular internalization and enhancing intracellular uptake via specific endocytic pathways.

Kartogenin prevents cartilage degradation and alleviates osteoarthritis progression in mice via the miR-146a/NRF2 axis

Mingzhuang Hou et al.

Summary: Kartogenin (KGN) has been shown to protect against cartilage degradation in an OA mouse model by promoting the synthesis of cartilage matrix components and suppressing the expression of matrix degradation enzymes. This protective effect is mediated by the miR-146a-NRF2 axis, highlighting KGN as a potential therapeutic agent for OA-induced cartilage degeneration.
