The validity and reliability of the PHQ-9 on screening of depression in neurology: a cross sectional study

Yajing Sun et al.

Summary: This study explored the validity and reliability of PHQ-9 for screening depression among patients with neurological disorders and identified factors influencing such patients. The results demonstrated good reliability and validity of PHQ-9 in the Chinese population. Unemployment was found to be a significant risk factor for depression in patients with neurological disorders.

Apathy as a Treatment Target in Alzheimer's Disease: Implications for Clinical Trials

Moyra E. Mortby et al.

Summary: Apathy is a prevalent and persistent neuropsychiatric symptom in neurocognitive disorders, and recent advances in understanding and intervention highlight its importance. Progress has been made in understanding apathy as a treatment target, but further research is needed in areas such as diagnostic procedures, symptom measurement, biological mechanisms, and treatment strategies. Advancing the understanding of apathy's subdomains and biological mechanisms will promote its role as a treatment target in clinical trials.

The neurobiology of apathy in depression and neurocognitive impairment in older adults: a review of epidemiological, clinical, neuropsychological and biological research

David C. Steffens et al.

Summary: Apathy is a common condition associated with several neuropsychiatric disorders and cognitive decline. Studies suggest dysfunctional brain circuitry, particularly in the prefrontal cortex, as a possible underlying cause. However, inconsistent findings and methodological issues need to be addressed in future research.

Distinguishing apathy and depression in older adults with mild cognitive impairment using text, audio, and video based on multiclass classification and shapely additive explanations

Ying Zhou et al.

Summary: This study developed a classification model based on text, audio, and video features to detect and distinguish apathy and depression, and utilized the SHAP toolkit to increase the interpretability of the model. The results showed that apathy and depression shared some features while also exhibiting distinct features. A combination of text, audio, and video could be used to improve the early detection and differential diagnosis of apathy and depression in MCI patients.

Measuring neuropsychiatric symptoms in patients with early cognitive decline using speech analysis

Alexandra Konig et al.

Summary: Different speech variables are associated with specific NPS; apathy correlates with temporal aspects, and anxiety with voice quality-and this was mostly consistent between male and female after correction for cognitive impairment. Machine learning regressors are able to extract information from speech features and perform above baseline in predicting anxiety, apathy, and depression scores.
