Underwater Optical Wireless Communications With InGaN LEDs Grown With an Asymmetric Multiple Quantum Well for Light Emission or Detection

Chia-Lung Tsai et al.

Summary: This study proposes the use of asymmetric multiple quantum well InGaN light-emitting diodes (LEDs) for optical communication with an avalanche photodiode (APD)-based receiver. Compared to red AlGaInP LEDs, these blue LEDs provide improved light output and enhanced system bandwidth for a directed line-of-sight optical link passing through a 100-cm-long water tank. The use of a thin GaN barrier near the n-GaN helps mitigate nonuniform carrier distribution within the InGaN MQWs, allowing for successful establishment of a 300 Mbit/s LED-based underwater data link.

275 nm Deep Ultraviolet AlGaN-Based Micro-LED Arrays for Ultraviolet Communication

Liang Guo et al.

Summary: In this work, we fabricated and characterized 4 x 4 parallel flip-chip AlGaN-based micro-LED arrays with varied mesa diameters. The electrical and optical characteristics of the micro-LED arrays show strong size dependence for ultraviolet communication (UVC). Our research proves that tailoring the mesa size of parallel flip-chip AlGaN-based micro-LED arrays can further enhance its performance in UVC.
