Firebrand deposition on cubic structures in tandem and parallel arrangements

Aditya Mankame et al.

Summary: Spot fires caused by wind-carried firebrands are common in wildland-urban interface (WUI) fires. This study focused on firebrand deposition over cubic blocks in tandem and parallel arrangements, representing nearby small structures in the WUI. Large eddy simulations were used to model flow turbulence, while firebrands were simulated in the Lagrangian framework. The simulations revealed that the blocks protected their immediate leeward areas from firebrand deposition, creating safe zones in the shape of an isosceles trapezoid. The length of the safe zone increased with wind speeds, and upwind blocks also protected the lower part of the windward face of downwind blocks from firebrand deposition in certain cases.

UFS-Net: A unified flame and smoke detection method for early detection of fire in video surveillance applications using CNNs

Ali Hosseini et al.

Summary: Fire is a recurring event that causes significant damage in various environments, making machine vision-based fire detection an important task. In this research, a unified flame and smoke detection approach called UFS-Net, based on deep learning, is proposed. UFS-Net can classify video frames into eight classes to identify fire hazards and achieve high performance through extensive experiments and comparisons with state-of-the-art methods.

Thermal dynamics of deposited firebrands using phosphor thermometry

Yasin M. Abul-Huda et al.

Summary: This study investigates the thermal mechanisms governing the ignition propensity of firebrands using temperature-sensitive phosphorescence. It finds that the large difference in contact temperatures is significant for ignition, and secondary heating events can lead to peak net heat flux equivalent to 70% of the initial deposition. Additionally, the paper discusses the presence of unimodal and bimodal contact temperature distributions.

Development of a Field Deployable Firebrand Flux and Condition Measurement System

Simone Zen et al.

Summary: A new instrument called emberometer has been developed to quantify firebrand dynamics during fires, especially those in the Wildland-Urban Interface (WUI), addressing difficulties in collecting firebrands in the field. Laboratory experiments were conducted to calibrate and validate the imaging techniques, while field observations showed the potential use of emberometer in studying firebrand and spot fire dynamics.

Machine Vision Based Fire Detection Techniques: A Survey

S. Geetha et al.

Summary: The risk of fires in urban buildings is increasing, and traditional methods of fire detection using smoke sensors have limitations. The introduction of video surveillance systems has provided new opportunities for identifying smoke and flame from a distance. Various methods, including image processing algorithms and CNNs, have been proposed to address the challenges of processing large amounts of data and improve fire and smoke detection in videos and images.

A new approach to characterize firebrand showers using advanced 3D imaging techniques

Nicolas Bouvet et al.

Summary: This study presents a new approach to characterize airborne firebrands during WUI fires by merging 3D Particle Tracking Velocimetry and 3D Particle Shape Reconstruction into a diagnostic tool. The tool allows for the first time the simultaneous study of time-resolved firebrand fluxes and firebrand size distribution. Results show that the size distribution of airborne firebrands differs from that obtained through ground collection.

Summary: The study found that, compared to eucalyptus and pine trees, oak trees have a higher risk of releasing firebrands, with Quercus and Quercus robur being the species that produce more firebrands. The age of adult trees has a significant impact on the release of firebrands.
