Path instabilities of a freely rising or falling sphere

Shravan K. R. Raaghav et al.

Summary: Path instabilities of a sphere rising or falling in a quiescent Newtonian fluid have been experimentally studied. The study aims to shed light on the path instabilities for which previous studies disagree. The experimental results agree with literature for the low Galileo number range, but show some disagreements for the higher Galileo number range. Additionally, some phenomena that were only observed in numerical simulations have been observed experimentally for the first time.

Sedimentation of inertial monodisperse suspensions of cubes and spheres

Arman Seyed-Ahmadi et al.

Summary: Particle-resolved direct numerical simulations were conducted on monodisperse settling suspensions of cubes and spheres at Galileo numbers of 70 and 160, with solid volume fractions ranging from 0.01 to 0.2. Results showed that cube suspensions tend to be more homogeneous compared to sphere suspensions under the same experimental conditions. This enhanced homogeneity is attributed to the pronounced angular velocities of cubes, which promote transverse motions and increase the likelihood of particles escaping from clusters.

The effects of particle clustering on hindered settling in high-concentration particle suspensions

Yinuo Yao et al.

Summary: This study found that cluster formation in high concentration particle suspensions is strongly dependent on the Archimedes number and weakly dependent on the volume fraction. Particles in low Archimedes number cases form less frequent but long-lived clusters, while high Archimedes number cases consist of more frequent but short-lived clusters. The results imply the existence of an Archimedes number for particles in fluidized bed reactors that can enhance performance by reducing short circuiting due to clustering.
