Peroxidase-like Activity of CeO2 Nanozymes: Particle Size and Chemical Environment Matter

Arina D. D. Filippova et al.

Summary: The enzyme-like activity of metal oxide nanoparticles is influenced by factors such as size, shape, surface chemistry, and substrate affinity. The size effect of ceria nanoparticles, a prominent inorganic nanozyme, is still not well understood. This study investigated the peroxidase-like activity of CeO2 nanoparticles with different sizes in different buffer solutions, and found that the size of the nanoparticles had different effects on their activity depending on the buffer solution used. The possible reasons for these differences are discussed.

High Efficacy on the Death of Breast Cancer Cells Using SPMHT with Magnetite Cyclodextrins Nanobioconjugates

Costica Caizer et al.

Summary: In this study, we conducted in vitro experiments using Fe3O4-PAA-(HP-gamma-CDs) nanobioconjugates to apply superparamagnetic hyperthermia (SPMHT) on MCF-7 human breast adenocarcinoma cells. By optimizing the frequency and magnetic field strength, we achieved a high cancer cell death rate of 95.11% without affecting healthy cells. Additionally, we discovered a new upper biological limit for safely applying the magnetic field, which is twice as high as the current known value.

Poly(l-Histidine)-Mediated On-Demand Therapeutic Delivery of Roughened Ceria Nanocages for Treatment of Chemical Eye Injury

Chia-Jung Yang et al.

Summary: Development of topical bioactive formulations capable of overcoming low bioavailability of conventional eye drops is crucial for effective treatment of ocular chemical burns. In this study, a nanomedicine strategy utilizing surface roughness-controlled ceria nanocages (SRCNs) and poly(l-histidine) surface coatings is proposed to achieve multiple bioactive functions of therapeutic nanocarriers, enhance transport across corneal epithelial barriers, and enable on-demand release of dual drugs. The nanoformulation was found to effectively reduce corneal wound areas, attenuate abnormal blood vessels, and restore corneal transparency, demonstrating great potential for ocular pharmacology and tissue regenerative medicine.

Interpreting global trends in type 2 diabetes complications and mortality

Mohammed K. Ali et al.

Summary: International trends in traditional diabetes complications and mortality rates are mainly studied in a few high-income countries, where cardiovascular complication rates and all-cause mortality in diabetes patients are declining, while some low- and middle-income countries show the opposite trend. Variations in case definitions and diagnostic approaches across countries significantly impact the interpretation of research data. Standardization in data collection, case definitions, analytical methods, and reporting guidelines is recommended to better document trends in type 2 diabetes complications and mortality rates globally.
