Phylogenetic relationships and divergence dating of Mantodea using mitochondrial phylogenomics

Yue Ma et al.

Summary: Mantodea is a group of predatory insects that inhabit various habitats. Praying mantis species employ mimicry and camouflage strategies to catch prey and hide from natural enemies. The emergence of a cyclopean ear in mantises has been hypothesized to be a result of an arms race with echolocating bats, but this hypothesis has not been thoroughly tested due to a lack of comprehensive phylogenetic analysis and chronological information.

Mitochondrial genomes of 10 Mantidae species and their phylogenetic implications

Wenjing Wang et al.

Summary: This article presents a phylogenetic evaluation of Mantidae based on a mitochondrial genome data set. The mitogenome of 10 Mantidae species were sequenced and analyzed. The results revealed specific genes and control regions in Mantidae mitogenomes. Nucleotide diversity and Ka/Ks analysis showed variation and evolutionary rate differences in certain genes. The reconstruction of phylogenetic relationships highlighted the monophyletic groups formed by Mantinae and Vatinae subfamilies, while the monophyly of other subfamilies was not supported.

Novel Mitochondrial Gene Rearrangement and Intergenic Regions Exist in the Mitochondrial Genomes from Four Newly Established Families of Praying Mantises (Insecta: Mantodea)

Yi-Jie Lin et al.

Summary: In this study, the formation mechanisms of gene rearrangements and LNCRs in Mantodea were explored, providing insights into the phylogenetic relationships within this order. Several novel gene rearrangements were detected, and conserved motifs were identified. The study also supported the monophyly of one family and the paraphyly of another, and identified synapomorphies exclusive to certain clades.

Wing morphology of a new Cretaceous praying mantis solves the phylogenetic jigsaw of early-diverging extant lineages

Alexandre V. Demers-Potvin et al.

Summary: This study presents a new fossil species Labradormantis guilbaulti from Canada, displaying a unique combination of ancestral and derived character states. The fossil is classified within the extinct family Baissomantidae, and helps to elucidate the phylogenetic relationships of early-diverging extant lineages. The inclusion of fossils is crucial for understanding the evolutionary trends of modern mantises and resolving their phylogenetic relationships.

Summary: The study sequenced and annotated four new praying mantis mitogenomes, revealing differences in gene composition among different species. The phylogenetic analysis supported the previous taxonomic system, demonstrating that mitochondrial data can be used to elucidate relationships between mantis species.

Summary: Gene rearrangements have been discovered in several mantodea mitochondrial genomes, primarily concentrated in the region of CR-I-Q-M-ND2. These rearrangements may serve as shared characteristics for different groups within the Mantidae family.
