The role of insufficient sleep and circadian misalignment in obesity

Jean-Philippe Chaput et al.

Summary: Traditional risk factors cannot fully explain the high prevalence of obesity and metabolic syndrome. Insufficient sleep and circadian misalignment have gained increasing research attention and are associated with poor metabolic health and weight gain. This Review discusses the impact of insufficient sleep and circadian misalignment on appetite hormones, energy expenditure, food intake, and obesity risk in humans. It also suggests potential strategies to mitigate the adverse effects of sleep disruption.

Obstructive sleep apnoea heterogeneity and cardiovascular disease

Susan Redline et al.

Summary: In this Review, the authors summarize the shared risk factors and causal links between obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) and cardiovascular disease (CVD), as well as the emerging knowledge on the heterogeneity of OSA. They also explore the potential role of new biomarkers for cardiovascular risk stratification in patients with OSA.

Adipocytokines in obstructive sleep apnea: A systematic review and meta-analysis

Parisa Janmohammadi et al.

Summary: This meta-analysis examined the relationship between obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and circulating level of adipocytokines. The results showed higher levels of IL-1 beta, IL-4, IL-8, IL-17, and IFN-gamma in OSA patients compared to controls, while IL-10 levels were lower. These findings suggest that adipocytokines may contribute to the pathology of OSA.

International Consensus Document on Obstructive Sleep Apnea

Olga Mediano et al.

Summary: The aim of this international consensus document is to provide guidelines for healthcare professionals in the care of adult patients with obstructive sleep apnea based on a critical analysis of the latest literature. The document was developed by an expert working group consisting of scientific societies, specialists, and a methodology expert, and includes systematic literature searches for each section. The document does not cover pediatric patients or the management of patients receiving chronic non-invasive mechanical ventilation.

IL-6, IL-1RA and Resistin as Predictors of Left Ventricular Remodelling and Major Adverse Cardiac Events in Patients with Acute ST Elevation Myocardial Infarction

Alina Ioana Scarlatescu et al.

Summary: This study aimed to explore the role of three inflammatory cytokines (IL-1RA, IL-6, and resistin) as independent prognostic factors for left ventricular remodeling (LVR) and major adverse cardiac events (MACE) in patients with ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI). The results showed that the combined measurement of these cytokines has a better predictive value for LVR and MACE compared to individual cytokines.

Effects of sleep apnea hypopnea syndromes on cardiovascular events: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Liang Xie et al.

Summary: While sleep apnea hypopnea syndrome (SAHS) does not seem to have a significant impact on cardiovascular events, it may have a protective effect as patients with SAHS showed lower peak troponin levels during cardiovascular events. However, patients with SAHS exhibited worse coronary lesion conditions grading.

From Classic to Modern Prognostic Biomarkers in Patients with Acute Myocardial Infarction

Cristian Statescu et al.

Summary: Despite lacking an ideal biomarker for risk assessment in patients with AMI, recent studies have shown promising results. Several novel biomarkers related to the pathophysiological processes in AMI patients have been identified, and their inclusion in multi-biomarker strategies may provide additional prognostic value. Additionally, the use of artificial intelligence algorithms for risk stratification and prognostic assessment has the potential to significantly improve outcomes.

Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) responses are modulated by total sleep time and wake after sleep onset in healthy older adults

Jennifer Zitser et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the objective sleep influencers behind older adult responses to subjective sleep measures, specifically the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). The results showed that wake after sleep onset (WASO), sleep efficiency (SE), and total sleep time (TST) were associated with subjective sleep disturbance measured by the PSQI. These findings suggest that objective sleep parameters can influence the subjective assessment of sleep quality in older adults.

Adipokines in Sleep Disturbance and Metabolic Dysfunction: Insights from Network Analysis

Zhikui Wei et al.

Summary: Adipokines play important roles in obesity, sleep disturbance, and metabolic dysregulation. The study reveals that obesity and obstructive sleep apnea are major drivers for sleep-associated metabolic dysregulation. Leptin and adiponectin have central roles in this network and have potential as interventional targets for metabolic and sleep disorders.

Myocardial Infarction with and without ST-segment Elevation: a Contemporary Reappraisal of Similarities and Differences

Andreas Mitsis et al.

Summary: Understanding the similarities and differences between myocardial infarction with or without ST-segment elevation is crucial for proper patient management. While the incidence of STEMI and NSTEMI varies, short-term prognosis is worse for STEMI but long-term outcomes are comparable. Management differs, with immediate reperfusion for STEMIs and risk stratification for NSTEMIs.
