CCND2 and miR-206 as potential biomarkers in the clinical diagnosis of thyroid carcinoma by fine-needle aspiration cytology

Shifa Yuan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between cyclin D2 (CCND2) and miR-206 expression in fine-needle aspiration cytology of thyroid carcinoma. The results showed that the expression level of miR-206 was significantly decreased and CCND2 was significantly increased in thyroid cancer patients compared to those with benign thyroid nodules. CCND2 and miR-206 expression were negatively correlated in thyroid cancer tissues. They may become new biomarkers for clinical diagnosis of thyroid cancer based on fine-needle aspiration cytology of thyroid nodules.

Molecular/biomarker testing in lung cytology: A practical approach

Fernando Schmitt et al.

Summary: The understanding of molecular mechanisms in lung cancer and the discovery of targetable genomic alterations have significantly changed the pathological approach to lung cancer, particularly non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). Pathologists have been at the forefront of lung cancer management due to this unstoppable knowledge. In the field of cytopathology, where maximizing output with minimal input is a daily challenge, there has been a paradigm shift in the care and handling of diagnostic samples. This shift emphasizes the utilization of cytologic samples and small biopsies for both diagnostic and ancillary testing purposes.

Utility and Limitations of Fine-Needle Aspiration Cytology in the Diagnosis of Lymphadenopathy

Hwa Jeong Ha et al.

Summary: This study assessed the reliability and effectiveness of fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC) in the diagnosis of lymphadenopathy. The results showed that FNAC was safe, practical, and effective in the early diagnosis of lymphadenopathy. However, it had limitations in some diagnoses, suggesting the need for additional attempts according to the clinical situation.

Gene Expression Profiles Associated with Radio-Responsiveness in Locally Advanced Rectal Cancer

Jeeyong Lee et al.

Summary: The standard treatment for locally advanced rectal cancer (LARC) involves chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and surgery. Identifying biomarkers that can discriminate radio-responsiveness before surgery is crucial to improve treatment outcomes and reduce side effects. Research has identified candidate genes involved in radio-responsiveness, such as CTSE, which exhibited differential methylation at the promoter region inversely correlated with radio-resistance. This study aims to develop a gene chip for diagnosing radio-responsiveness in LARC patients, with the potential to improve patient prognosis.

High Expression of Hyaluronan-Mediated Motility Receptor Predicts Adverse Outcomes: A Potential Therapeutic Target for Head and Neck Squamous Cell Carcinoma

Tianzhu Lu et al.

Summary: The study found that HMMR is highly expressed in HNSCC tumor tissue, and high HMMR mRNA expression is an independent prognostic factor in TCGA and GSE41613 data. The methylation level of HMMR is negatively correlated with its expression, with patients having low methylation levels showing worse overall survival. HMMR may be associated with biological functions related to the KARS, EMT, and G2M checkpoint pathways, interferon-gamma, and interferon-alpha responses.

Targeting Mitochondrial Protein Expression as a Future Approach for Cancer Therapy

Daniela Criscuolo et al.

Summary: Extensive metabolic remodeling is a key feature of cancer cells, with mitochondria playing central roles in cancer development and progression. Coordinated regulation of mitochondrial and cytosolic mRNA translation is crucial for maintaining the integrity of the mitochondrial proteome and functions in cancer cells.

Mitochondrial Control of Genomic Instability in Cancer

Massimo Bonora et al.

Summary: Cancer cells display genomic instability, with mitochondria playing a key role in responding to DNA alterations and affecting cell survival and the accumulation of mutations. Mitochondrial alterations in cancer can impact cell death pathways and metabolic plasticity, contributing to the evolution of the disease. Mitochondria are involved in regulating cell death and metabolic adaptation in tumor cells, and their role in supporting genomic instability in cancer is an important aspect that warrants further exploration.
