Remote ischemic postconditioning ameliorates stroke injury via the SDF-1α/CXCR4 signaling axis in rats

Guannan Jiang et al.

Summary: The study investigates the protective effect of Remote Ischemic Postconditioning (RIPostC) on rats after ischemic stroke. RIPostC was found to improve neurological recovery and brain injury in rats by upregulating the expression levels of CXCR4 and SDF-1 alpha. The neuroprotective effect of RIPostC was diminished when the SDF-1 alpha/CXCR4 signaling axis was inhibited. RIPostC can be used as an intervention strategy for stroke, and the SDF-1 alpha/CXCR4 signaling axis can be a potential target for intervention.

miR-548j-5p regulates angiogenesis in peripheral artery disease

Chiu-Yang Lee et al.

Summary: This study investigated the regulation of miR-548j-5p in patients with peripheral artery disease (PAD) and its impact on angiogenesis of endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs). The results showed that up-regulation of miR-548j-5p promoted angiogenesis in ischemic tissue, suggesting it as a potential therapeutic approach for PAD.

Establishing the Mutational Spectrum of Hungarian Patients with Familial Hypercholesterolemia

Laszlo Madar et al.

Summary: This study presents the clinical and molecular data of 44 unrelated individuals with suspected familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) in Hungary. Variants in LDLR and APOB genes were found to be the most common, with the c.10580G>A p.(Arg3527Gln) alteration in APOB gene being the most frequent. Several missense variants in the LDLR gene were detected in multiple index patients. The LDLR variants in the Hungarian population largely overlap with those detected in neighboring countries.

Summary: This study found significant correlations between PGRN concentrations and triglyceride, inflammatory markers, sVCAM-1, and HDL subfractions in patients with FH. Furthermore, PGRN may exert its anti-atherogenic effect by altering HDL composition and improving inflammation.

Clinical Aspects of Genetic and Non-Genetic Cardiovascular Risk Factors in Familial Hypercholesterolemia

Eszter Berta et al.

Summary: Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is a common monogenic metabolic disorder with wide phenotypic heterogeneity, posing challenges in cardiovascular risk prediction and therapeutic strategy determination. Beyond lifetime low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C) accumulation, other genetic and non-genetic risk factors may exacerbate the development of the disease. This review summarizes the most important genetic and non-genetic factors that might affect the risk prediction and therapeutic strategy in FH, emphasizing the need for an interdisciplinary approach in finding the best treatment methods.

Why patients with familial hypercholesterolemia are at high cardiovascular risk? Beyond LDL-C levels * , **

Vanessa Bianconi et al.

Summary: Familial hypercholesterolemia (FH) is a common genetic disorder characterized by elevated LDL-C levels due to defective clearance of LDL particles, leading to increased risk of premature cardiovascular disease. Besides LDL-C, other CVD risk factors may also contribute to the overall CVD risk burden in FH patients.

Summary: This review summarizes the main achievements in basic and clinical research of atherosclerosis, with a focus on desialylation as a key reaction in the development of atherogenic properties in lipoproteins. It also discusses the immunogenicity of lipoproteins, enzymes contributing to their desialylation, and animal models of atherosclerosis, as well as evaluating experimental and diagnostic protocols for developing new therapeutic approaches.
