CYSTEINE-RICH RECEPTOR-LIKE PROTEIN KINASES: their evolution, structure, and roles in stress response and development

Adam Zeiner et al.

Summary: CYSTEINE-RICH RLKs (CRKs), a subgroup of plant-specific receptor-like protein kinases (RLKs), play important regulatory roles in developmental and stress-related signaling pathways. Recent studies have revealed the interactions of CRKs with various proteins and their localization within the plasma membrane. The exact activation post-translational modification or ligands perceived by CRKs are still unknown.

Receptor-like cytoplasmic kinase ScRIPK in sugarcane regulates disease resistance and drought tolerance in Arabidopsis

Jinlan Fang et al.

Summary: A RLCK gene, ScRIPK, was discovered in sugarcane, and its expression was regulated by drought and fungal infection. Overexpression of ScRIPK in Arabidopsis enhanced drought tolerance but increased susceptibility to disease. In addition, the activation mechanism of ScRIPK was characterized and the interaction partner ScRIN4 was identified.

Cysteine-rich receptor-like protein kinases: emerging regulators of plant stress responses

Yongxue Zhang et al.

Summary: Cysteine-rich receptor-like kinases (CRKs), belonging to a large DUF26-containing receptor-like kinase (RLK) family, have important roles in immunity, abiotic stress response, and growth and development. Recent studies have provided insights into the molecular mechanisms underlying CRK functions in Ca2+ influx, reactive oxygen species production, callose deposition, stomatal immunity, and programmed cell death (PCD). This review focuses on the structure-function relationship of CRKs, with an emphasis on their roles in immunity, abiotic stress response, and the tradeoff between growth and stress tolerance. We critically analyze and synthesize how CRKs control intricate regulatory networks that determine diverse phenotypic outputs in plants.

Leucine-rich repeat receptor-like protein kinase AtORPK1 promotes oxidative stress resistance in an AtORPK1-AtKAPP mediated module in Arabidopsis

Lei Yang et al.

Summary: Signal perception and transduction by cell surface receptors play a crucial role in cell-cell communication and plant response to abiotic stress. In this study, a new leucine-rich repeat receptor-like kinase (LRR-RLK), AtORPK1, was identified in Arabidopsis thaliana. AtORPK1 was found to be ubiquitously expressed in various tissues and organs, and its loss-of-function reduced oxidative stress resistance in plants. The sub-cellular localization analysis showed that AtORPK1 is localized to the plasma membrane and endosomes, and it interacts with a downstream phosphatase, AtKAPP, in enlarged endosomes.

Summary: This study provides a comprehensive analysis of the LRR-RLK gene family in paper mulberry, revealing the existence of 236 LRR-RLK genes and their classification. The analysis indicates that these genes have divergent structures and motifs, and their expansion is attributed to tandem and segmental duplications. Additionally, these genes are associated with plant development, stress response, especially cold resistance.

The Receptor-like Kinase TaCRK-7A Inhibits Fusarium pseudograminearum Growth and Mediates Resistance to Fusarium Crown Rot in Wheat

Tianci Wu et al.

Summary: This study identified that the wheat DUF26 domain-containing receptor-like kinase TaCRK-7A plays a positive role in the defense against F. pseudograminearum, inhibiting the growth of the pathogen and regulating the expression of defense genes in wheat. The higher expression of TaCRK-7A was associated with increased resistance in wheat genotypes, while its knockdown compromised resistance and reduced defense gene transcripts. These findings suggest TaCRK-7A as a potential gene resource for breeding FCR-resistant wheat.
