17β-Estradiol Induced Sex Reversal and Gonadal Transcriptome Analysis in the Oriental River Prawn (Macrobrachium nipponense): Mechanisms, Pathways, and Potential Harm

Pengfei Cai et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the potential of dietary supplementation with 17 beta-estradiol (E-2) in inducing sex reversal in prawns. By performing gonadal transcriptome analysis, it was found that E-2 supplementation resulted in the highest female to male sex ratio of 2.22:1. Key pathways for sex reversal and sperm maturation were identified, and genes related to reproduction were found to be differentially expressed in the process of sex reversal. This study provides valuable evidence for the establishment of monoculture in this species.

Vitellogenin-derived fragment in embryos of Japanese flounder Paralichthys olivaceus with binding and bactericidal activities against an infectious bacterium via an interaction with saccharides

Shigeyuki Tsutsui et al.

Summary: Thirty- and 90-kDa proteins with binding ability to Edwardsiella tarda were purified from Japanese flounder embryos. The 90-kDa protein was identified as lipovitellin heavy-chain (LvH), one of the proteolytically cleaved products of maternal vitellogenin (Vg), while the 30-kDa protein was an N-terminal bit of LvH. The 30-kDa protein showed strong bactericidal activity against E. tarda, suggesting its important role during embryogenesis in flounder.

Summary: This study investigated the regulatory effects of E2 and MT on the growth performance and gonadal development of juvenile prawns. The results showed that high doses of E2 and MT promoted the growth and inhibited the gonadal development of the prawns.

Cyp17a1 is Required for Female Sex Determination and Male Fertility by Regulating Sex Steroid Biosynthesis in Fish

Lanying Yang et al.

Summary: In teleost fish, the gene Cyp17a1 plays a crucial role in steroidogenesis, sex determination, and fertility. Mutations in the cyp17a1 gene in Nile tilapia led to female-to-male sex reversal and deficiencies in hormone production, impacting both the sex determination and reproductive processes in fish. Overall, Cyp17a1 is found to be essential for E2 production in female sex determination and differentiation, as well as for T and 11-KT production in promoting spermatogenesis and fertility in male fish.

A sex-reversing factor: insulin-like androgenic gland hormone in decapods

Rong Sun et al.

Summary: Decapod crustaceans exhibit sexual dimorphism in body size, with some species possessing strong invasive ability that can damage ecosystems. Insulin-like androgenic gland hormone plays a key role in sex differentiation and other functions in decapods, and has important applications in cultivation. Research on the structure, function, application, and molecular regulation mechanism of this hormone has attracted significant attention in recent years.

Effect of paternal exposure to microcystin-LR on testicular dysfunction, reproduction, and offspring immune response in the oriental river prawn (Macrobrachium nipponense)

Shengming Sun et al.

Summary: Microcystin-LR poses a threat to aquatic animal reproduction and can be transferred from male prawns to their offspring, causing immune disorders and abnormal development. Exposure to Microcystin-LR results in increased mortality and decreased immune and antioxidant abilities in F1 larvae. Continued exposure to Microcystin-LR leads to mitochondrial apoptosis and cross-generational immunotoxicity in untreated prawns.

Lysosome biogenesis: Regulation and functions

Chonglin Yang et al.

Summary: Lysosomes serve as degradation centers and signaling hubs in cells, playing crucial roles in cellular homeostasis, development, and aging. Regulation of lysosome biogenesis is essential for cellular adaptation to various signals, including nutrient and nonnutrient signals, cell cycle, stem cell quiescence, and cell fate determination. The functions of lysosome biogenesis are important in organismal development and aging.

SEX DETERMINATION, GONADAL SEX DIFFERENTIATION, AND PLASTICITY IN VERTEBRATE SPECIES

Yoshitaka Nagahama et al.

Summary: A diverse array of sex determination mechanisms exist among vertebrates, with the major milestone being the discovery of the SRY gene in mammals. Significant progress has been made in understanding the molecular and cellular mechanisms involved in vertebrate sex determination and gonadal sex differentiation over the past three decades. The discovery of a large diversity of sex determination genes suggests the complexity and evolutionary implications of this biological event.
